  • Ball Joints and Excessive movement in clutch and break pedels

    Hi All

I have been watching this site for a while now, as i have bought a 1980 GLD and am looking to get it back on the road. It had quite a few things that needed fixing but the three things i want to ask about getting fixed are

    1. Bottom ball joints have excess movements. How hard are they to fix and where would i source them from in Melbourne??

    2. Various oil leaks. the car doesont use oil but the motor is very dirty. would this just be a matter of degreasing it before the road worthy and hope it doesnt leak. the rear mail seal is leaking. does this require the engine to come out or can the two be seperated in the car and the seal fixed... where would this be sourced from??

    3. He also said the there is excess movement in the break and clutch pedals, how would o go about fixing this. is it a matter of rebushing the joints??

    Thanks in advance.

P.S. I wanted to add to the 'you know you drive a mk1 when you', but i havent registered it yet. But i wanted to add you know you DONT drive a golf when you go to get it road worthied and the mechanic tell you to just take the car away and not bring it back, but he feels so sorry for you he wont charge you for the RWC test.

1: Easy to change. Just drill out the rivets and bolt in new ones. Most VW parts shops should be able to get them. I got mine sent down from Camden GTI in NSW. You might like to try VolksBaru in Noble Park. By rights Repco should be able to order them too.

    2. Rear main seal is easiest to do by removing engine and gearbox as a unit and seperating them once away from the car. If the rear main is leaking you'll probably need the replace the clutch at the same time. The rear main seal is a common size, the dealerships should still stock them, the Mk3 uses the same one. Bearing shops often have them too.

There's more oil seals at the other end of the motor, they're a source of leaks too.

    3 Clutch - adjust the cable - that's it.

Brakes, adjust the rear drums and bleed the system. If that doesn't work come back and ask more questions.

If you update your location there might be someone nearby who can offer some advice. ("user cp" setting)
