  • Wow this is a big thread thingy. My Mk1 is off the road at the moment so I replaced the tattered tarp that keeps her from rusting away. Oh and I tried some new mags which didn't fit because of the GTI caliper clearance thing. LOL.

    • Wow, i have something to post in this thread again!

Made a mess of my already filthy engine bay:

Scrubbed the intake manifold pretty clean, going to try oven-cleaner on it tomorrow.

      • Since last weekend:

Put the sunroof mechanism back together, fitted it and discovered the motor didn't have the oomph to operate it. Gave up, removed the motor and fixed up all the interior trim.
Discovered the new battery was a bit loose (different profile at bottom to old one), fitted some aluminium shims my mate made up for me. Problem sorted.
Fitted fuse for alarm and central locking (discovered the hard way and kept getting caught out by the alarm automatically arming itself 30 seconds after shutting the either door or bootlid)
Fixed the horn button which broke after some oncoming tool decided to turn right in front of me.
        Forgot to get coolant.
Vacuumed the interior, made the dash and interior trim look pretty. Spider count - 0.
Stuck down the bootlid trim that was peeling off, also the plastic bit on the drivers side carpet.
Fitted the lower dashboard pieces (now all I need to do is find the screws).
Attacked the car with the local jet wash (looks waaaaay better without all the dust on it).
Went for a good long test drive, discovered a bit of a tendency to veer to the left under hard braking (meanwhile the steering wheel does its own thing).

        Next step: booking the roadworthy

ps. apologies for length but your mum said she likes it

                  • Checked all the plug gaps in a vain attempt to find out why Helga is reluctant to start. Decided it probably is fuel-flow related, so next weekend will be dismantling of the pump and filter assembly.

Cleaned as much built up crap off the underside of the engine in an attempt to locate the source of the oil leak. Think it might be from the gearbox. Uh oh...

                        • just bought a mk1. standard nuts and bolts checks over the weekend.

dont have fifth, and first or reverse is pot luck, so just ordered a new linkage bushing kit.

also can anyone recommend a good transmission/gearbox oil?

                            It's okay, I don't have fifth either.
