What did you fix/replace on your Mk1 today?

took my car to J&F Motors......for the 1st time (actually 1st time for any car I've owned)..thank you.....they fixed the timing and my Weber carby/manifold leak (which needed a bit of ingenuity) and the Cabby is driving like new again (even the gear shifts feel closer/tighter??)

Only downside was a new rattle on the drive, 1/2 way home, but this is no doubt a 5 min fix. when I see daylight again on the w/e.

So would fish oil be best at this stage or rust killer first?

I used some fish oil that doesn't smell too bad. Not overpowering but you wouldn't want to spray it on before a night out. I think it's Export, not sure. Don't mind the smell if it does what it's supposed to.

Actually my parents take heaps of those enourmous fish oil capsules - maybe I should just used some of them. Fish oil - the miracle product.

Alternatively, repair it properly haha.
The only real way to stop a panel rusting it to remove the infected area. I guess it's called 'cancer' for a reason!

Thanks for that. I know it needs to be dealt with properly but I was just asking about how to slow it in the short term. Still haven't had a chance to look at it closely. The 'easiest' fix would probably be a new door...

Ha tell me about it. I'm trying to find a Mexico Beige door to save me repairing and painting it.

No worries! Rust-eeter, Kill-rust etc. All good products. Then fish-oil.
Then don't let dirt/mud accumulate in there, and make sure the water drips straight out.

Replaced the standard gti steering wheel with a 350mm deep-dish momo copy. Bringing the wheel closer has really improved the driving position, I used to have my legs scrunched up and my arms fully outstretched. I'd like to know what dimensions Volkswagen thought people had when they developed the mk1....

The biggest achievement of all though was that I actually got to drive the mk1 today for the first time in nearly 2 months. Man it is fun to drive Just what the doctor ordered!

Yeah, first thing I noticed when I first drove a MK1 was how close the pedals are to the driver. I don't even notice it now though.

Replaced... well, 'placed' the shifter linkages/bushes today.

Shifts quite a bit better now. Who woulda thought.

Also straightened and re-assembled a chrome bumper, I'll put it on tomorrow, it gets dark here at 4pm.

Drove the car up and down the street a few times. It's loud, and fun.

So turns out I 'straightened' the bumper too much. Doesn't follow the line of the front core, it's just straight.
Need to bend it back out a bit now haha!

good work, need to do my gear links and bushes asap... 1st and 3rd share same spot regularly.

Fitted a Newer carby today. Just one of the standard Solex ones. Car goes much now. and no for flat spots!!
Still hunts a bit on idle, and when i pull up to intersections it stalls 3 out 5 times. So unsure there.

Thought it timely to do a major service on the cabby.

Replaced:
- oil & filter
- Plugs
- Gear oil
- adjusted timing

Next weekend:
- replace brake fluid
- replace fuel filter

Driving like a charm again now.

Next few months, hope to install new brake rotors and pads.. And if the money gods smile, some new coilovers

Had to remove rear sway bar. Didn't realise when I lowered it that the sway bar was hard against the diesel inlet pipe (where u fill it)and cracked it. Only realized when car was parked on an angle and it left a big puddle of diesel.

adjusted exhaust again as it moves after a week or so... need a flange instead of a clamp...

Also fitted my Hood Lifts.. works a treat Just need to oil them up or just open bonnet 100+ times lol
