  • Bought some Mk3 steelies a few weeks ago. Decided to spray them up today. Not sure whether to put the silver lips on or not..?
Anyone recommend some tyre width options? Prob end up getting some spacers to push them out a bit too.

    • most likely you'll go for a 185/60, standard size for that wheel. if you wanted to stance it out and etc etc etc, a 155/55 will be the 'coolest' tyre you could stick on it, AFAIK. (of our selection of readily available tyres in AUS)

        • I disconnected the coolant temperature sender and the car runs better than ever, revs and pulls all the way to 6700! (fwiw: a new and old sensor had same issues)

I don't know why this is the case.

Nice work Mik. Is that with the New ecu?? Sounds like both the sensors are the wrong one.

            • Found a failed Expansion Tank cap.

The pressure relief valve had come apart inside the cap.

Same ECU as you had, but Beau had some sort of special soldering job going on. I hacked it back a bit and then did it as per the bentley, improved things a bit.

After testing it seems I am not getting enough advance, need to check it again in the am, and there is a resistance problem with the idle/wot switch (where can you buy them new?).

                Fun, fun, fun.

                • Touched the car for the first time in ages today.

Found two vacuum lines were disconnected, popped them back in, with no real difference.
Do all those multi-coloured lines really need to be there?

Gave the car a run. Did a burnout. Was fun.

Might (read: 'probably won't') go to a brake joint through the week and see what they can do for replacement rotors and pads. Discs on my car are about 8mm thick.

So I didn't really fix/replace anything. Story of my life.

                  • Dismantled...

The sunroof mechanism: removed it all and gave everything a good clean. The trim is currently being stuck back on to the inner lining thingy. That'll be done by next weekend then the whole shooting match can go back in. Hopefully i'll then have a tilt and slide roof as opposed to just a slightly tilty one.

The exhaust: took the back box off in readiness for re-welding of the second (dummy) tailpipe, which will hopefully cure some of the excess noise.

The horn: found one of the wires was loose so dismantled the steering wheel, put new clamps on the wires and replaced the double sided tape on the inside of the wheel centre.

The engine: tweaked the idle speed. Nearer 1000rpm than 600 now. Much better.

Weight reduction: removed the amp and a pair of 6x9s from the boot, taking off around 10kgs I reckon. Rear strut brace will go back in once I can find some nice rubber rings to cushion it a bit.

Next weekend: putting it all back together and booking the roadworthy for first weekend in July
There is no Golf in my life. This is unacceptable...

                    • Got mine serviced last week, but it still idles too high when cold and warming up (up to 1500 rpm).

Had an exhausting time yesterday when I removed old parking permits and put on a brand new pink (eek) one. Just too much

Actually, I washed it and noticed some serious rust on the bottom of the passenger door. Haven't had a close look but it's about 20-30cms long and has gone through the outer skin on the bottom . Dang.

So I fixed/replaced nothing. But I do have to re-glue the vent window (again) - the wind going through the gap is annoying.

                      • get some deoderised fish oil onto that rust pronto

help slow it down some, as well as cleaning the inside of the door so there is less crap there

                        • Jarred, have you found any deodorized fish oil that actually doesn't smell like fish?!

                          Comment

                          • there's one I got from supercheap that wasn't too bad. within a day or two you couldn't even smell the it, and when you sprayed it, it hardly smelt that bad anyways.

I think it was a septone product.

                            • Septone products are usually pretty good. I think my fish oil is Export, might as well rub rotting fish all over rust in my case!

                              • So would fish oil be best at this stage or rust killer first?

I used some fish oil that doesn't smell too bad. Not overpowering but you wouldn't want to spray it on before a night out. I think it's Export, not sure. Don't mind the smell if it does what it's supposed to.

Actually my parents take heaps of those enourmous fish oil capsules - maybe I should just used some of them. Fish oil - the miracle product.
