  • back to stock...

so maybe not today, but lately, i've been doing a few things on the mk1. i fixed the exhaust, put normal struts back in it instead of the coilovers and i've replaced the DGV carb with a dellorto DHLA.

also, i fixed the rust in the a-pillars and painted the windscreen surround matt black, for something different.

the car abo****ely is a ball of fun to drive - responsive, brakes are top notch (mk3 booster, gti discs/calipers and cordoba drums) and the handling is just wonderful with koni adjustables in the rear and sachs super tourers in the front, with spax sport springs and a fat, front mounted anti-roll bar on the front. also, i've made up a HUGE lower stress brace, and also a HUGE uppoer stress brace.... pics later....

anyway, i gave her a wash today, and went for a burn, and took some pics

apologies aobut the pics - damned resizing program made a real botched effort i reckon...

          • Had my brake system flushed and saw that the pads all round have plenty of meat still left on them. Pulled out the factory radio, in prep. for the new system I won on Greysonline on Friday. Painted the old windscreen seal trim, grille surround and wipers black with a paint pen....awaiting Steve's GTi alloys and tyres this week, then I'll fit and maybe lower the beast a tad too...watch this space...

hehe - its a total ball compared to when you were up here and drove it. different car really! i reckon you'd really enjoy it now! (although its a little disturbing driving a mk1 and NOT having the exhaust hit the floor )

              • coilovers removal

What sort of coilovers did you have?
Was it better or worse with them in
From the sound of it Im guessing that its better with out the coil overs?

                • Replaced the clutch cable. Was a right pain at times but worth it as it feels much smoother and the mysterious noise is gone. Satisfying too - greasykitchen actually got greasy

The exhaust doesn't hit the floor anymore?! Good god! It's just not a Mk1 then!

i had hottunings. i found them to be good handling wise, on the limit, and on a good surface. for more general situations, rough roads etc, the old suspension is much better. the hottunings springs are far too hard to provide good road holding on a rough surface with so little weight in the mk1. i considered getting some softer springs made up for the coilovers, but i need a set of coils for the racecar, and the suspension setup i have now works so well in the road car that i can live without the super-low looks.

                        • Topped up the oil, not such a big deal. But I spilled a bit as usual (damn stupid oil bottles). So on the way home later it started smelling like a lawn mower and smoking under the bonnet. Pulled over and had to clean the oil off the hot exhaust manifold Had to stop again after a few minutes cos I could see smoke coming from under the bonnet

                              • Resealed rocker cover hoping that is the only leaking point (wishful thinking I reckon).
