  • Will Gti steering wheel fit Mk1?

Does anyone know if a Mk1/2 Gti steering wheel will fit a regular mk1?

It's one of the wheels with a square centre and four horn buttons.. ad is ambiguous and seller not helpful.

I'm not sure whether it does or not, but I do know there are a few floating around in some back sheds in australia, so don't be to quick to buy from OS

They are not all the same as the spline size is different from early to late models. The four button type should be fine for a MK 1.

Thanks everyone, that was lightening fast! Well impressed after my first post on a forum.

Bad news is I have the 'S' shaped stalks (1976 mk1) so looks like I'll have to go aftermarket... unless someone has advice on changing stalks?

              Failing that..
Does anyone know how to adapt an aftermarket wheel so it turns the indicators off when you unwind the steering wheel after turning?

I've only done one aftermarket s/w in my sillycar (Celica ) many years ago, there wasn't any real science behind it, just plug in and go. I don't think Golf Mk1 will be any more complicated.

You should just be able to remove the cancelation ring from the original wheel and screw it onto the new boss. Most after market steering bosses are predrilled to take the stock ring.

Thanks, I'll see if I can get the cancellation ring out and fit it to the new wheel. I was running a momo with a cheap boss kit, but the damn kit wore through (after abt 2mnths) so that the horn would come on around tight corners!
If anyone knows about swapping indicator/wiper stalks let me know.

Just bought one from a guy who bought the wrong size for his 92 cab. Apparently pre-1990 MK1's and cabrio's have a smaller spline.. larger on post 90 cabs.

                        Hey Simon.
You saying the older smaller mk2 wheel wont fit? The early mk2's had the smaller spline as my old '85 steering wheel (same one you looked at on ebay) wont go on my '90 mk2. Still have the wheel btw
Would it be possible to swap the s-shaped stalks for early ('85-'87) mk2 stalks with the wheel???
                        Just a guess...

Mk2 steering wheel splines change in about 89? Early ones will fit Mk1.

You need post 78 MK1 stalks and they will fit straight into your 76model
