I am wondering what next i can do to wring some more power out of the rally car
it has an audi 1800 (1 with the injectors in the runners)
    268/272 deg cam
    light port and polish
    11:1 compression
    Electronic ign with haltech ecu
Crush bent (huricane) extractors and 2/1/4" system
not sure of bottom end specs.

All i can really think of is maybe some good rods, maybe different pistons, quad throttles and custom plenum, and some ports, dosnt look like you would get much bigger valves in em.

It is a great setup, bucket loads of torque between 3200-5500, i wannt keep it the same, just more of it! And without spending a fortune.

    Cheers

Big valve head Difference on the 16v is absolutely amazing and meant to be just as good for the 8v. Schrick sell the valves and you can also get them from www.techtonicstuning.com (I think these are Supertech valves). www.porttuning.com sell them too, along with completely built heads.

    BVH head for a 16v is a few thousand $ , but I'd imagine it's at least $1000 cheaper for an 8v.

Just had a look at my collection of "notes" on the hard drive - apparently, you can move from 38-41mm on the inlet side of an 8v and the exhaust is ideal at 80% of the intake size, so nearly 33mm, which is apparently what the exhaust side is as standard. Straight out of an BRM Motorsport book so is surely pretty spot on

          My suggestions are as follows
More headwork porting flowing 40mm inlet, 35 exhaust valves
Tuned extractors to suit (torque or revs)
          Blueprinting
          Big cam and adjustable gear
Improve fueling , bigger throttle body cold air intake.Adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
          Balance bottom end .
I would hope you already have a windage tray.

            Sound advice

Sound advice, Golfwise...Particularly the balancing of the bottom end. Essential if you intend to rev hard. Harmonic balancer/pulley to pressure plate recommended.

              Hey Jamie,
Can I ask what class you are running and how in the world did you get a CAMS logbook for your super-hot golf??

Sounds brilliant, just not sure how it could meet PRC regs. How much does it weigh out of curiosity?

                Re engine mods,

I have an article on the german MK1 golf that won the german rally championship and it ran a 1.6 with kugel ficher mechanical injection on throttle bodies 4 into 1 exhaust and was rev limited to 8200 for a rating of 186hp! So the 8v can be made to really rip! Start with a genuine solid lifter gti head, 40 / 33 valves stock, a cam bigger than 250dgrees dur @ .05thou lift lighten & balance everything, some porting, massive compression (11.5 + pending on fuel and cam) bore out to 83.5 for 1900cc, throttle bodies and extractors could see between 170 - 200hp. If you are rich a dry sump would be a cool addition. The motor should be ok for 8000rpm work too.

I'll try to pull my finger out, I'm building one at the moment and I'll try to photo document the project.

It runs in P3, i bought the car as is, i have had a gander through the cams manual and i would assume it is because, induction is free, cams are valve train is free, and capacity change is legal. As for super hot it is far from it at the moment, i could realy use another 20-30 hp. Especialy considering we are up against an escort with 140hp and another with 160-170 and we are equal leading the championship (saturday is the decider!!)

Thanks for the sugestions, i like the idea of big intake and some serious induction!

ohh and it just went over the scales, 908kg with almost a full tank!! i thought it was much heavier (was running light road mags, but that would only be 5-8kg difference)

Geez thats heavy. Must be the cage ect. Gunter weighed 780 kgs.
Imagine how much yours weighs after a rally with all the mud!! Cheers,

Wow, that is heavy there must be some weight that can come out somewhere perhaps?

I'm not too sure about a 1.8 re P3 but either its ok as mk1 GTI's were sold this way or its illegal due to them never being sold in Australia, maybe homologation papers would do it? If you have to keep the block there is a good chance a 1.8 crank may go in, which also may or may not be legal?

If you are stuck with a 1.6 it can be bored out to 83mm and a 1.8 gti head can be fitted to an early block this could be good a laugh for revs and much bigger valves than standard 1.6.

I have figured out the classing, it is not registered as a Golf GTI but as a Golf, meaning that it dosnt have to have the heron head, meaning the late model 8v can be used (because displacement change is allowed it is not a problem).

The minimum weight for P2 which is up to 1600cc is 880kg if i remember correctly (maybe 900) and it is the same for up to 1800cc, over 1800 is 980kg

The cage is all chrome molly, so its not as heavy as it could be, but it does have a lot of bar work, mate of mine in qld is running 960kg, but we re did the floor in 3mm plate cause he planned on going to 2ltr. There isnt much more weight to be taken out (easiest way is by swiss cheeseing the bar of the trailing arm)
