Wanted: Style Guidance - MkI Golf

I have no style so I thought I had better ask the VWwatercooled community for assistance. What is the current ‘look’ for MkI’s?

Currently my car is bog stock and I’ve got a set of 15x7” Gotti cup wheels to go on (think ATS cup’s).

Anyways, it will be interesting to read everyone’s opinions.

Thanks ausmk1 – you’re absolutely right. This is the exact feedback I was after.

Ultimately I would like to use it as a weekend road car, take it out on club days etc...

I don’t really see the need to drop a bigger motor into it. Power is great, but for me it’s more about the 70’s style. I’ll most likely improve the suspension, slap on my Gotti wheels, and clean up the original trim etc... all show and no go!

I voted retro classic, but I dunno what the current 'trends' are.... I reckon keep it simple, I mean as it is now lowered on those wheels would look awesome. But it's entirely up to you. Have a play on www.dubmodder.com and see what takes your fancy...

I reckon along brichies look, low clean std look with the wheels and all the std chrome
Souped up look, everyone expects its going to go like stink and its not going to (for a while anyway)

Other : 80s / 90s plastic look. Bib Bumpers, Wide wheels, Phay exhaust. and a big motor.

Choice is up to you at the end of the day, but obviously depends on how much money you are willing to throw at it! Might find it hard to track down a decent pair of chrome bumpers! Chrome look can be great, but I'm certainly not a fan of the chrome inserts in the window rubbers!

Personally, I'd go with what you have got! Clean up your black plastic bumpers (respray), bite the bullet with a pair of coilovers, put on your wheels, MK3 Recaros, remove the back seat and later down the track...bang in a 2L Clean, neat, simple and will always look the goods regardless of the 'current' trends!

Keep it simple is the way with a Mk1, IMO. No clipper kits or big "spoilers" (fitting name really!!). I too don't like the chrome window rubbers that much; a bit of chrome is nice, but you can definately go overboard and it's harder to maintain aswell.

The car will already look a million dollars if you slam it, cut the paint right back and buff it up, and fit some nice 195/45/15s on those wheels

Some of my fave Mk1s have been the budget ones with coilovers, nice wheels and tyres and nicely cleaned up stock paint and interior.

They handle pretty well even without swaybars and just nice coilovers too.

I love the Retro look. Looks saweet for a Mk1.

I also reckon the Rat Look is awesome too. but i wouldnt do it to a swallow tail. Beaten up Mk1 with matt black paint, numbers on the side and roof and a fast engine

Rally race is sweet aswell.

But its all about your choice bro.

I reckon that after you've seen more than enough pics & you know what the use/purpose of the car, you'll work exactly what you want & then go from there.
I'm more along the lines of the standard clean/sleeper look.

My GTI looks exactly like this but with red grill trim & four light grill

I agree with the guy who said mix it up!
I have a four door '76 Mk1 LS and plan to keep it really simple and subtle if I can. I too hate the chrome around the windows so that'll be going. I might be blaspheming here but I'm also going to be dechroming my small bumpers and painting them. As long as they're straight and the plastic ends are black no-one will really notice I don't think.
Mechanically I'm hoping to procure a 5 spd and four into one headers and keep the motor (1.6) as stock as possible. With the webber carb I got from Golfwise and a set of H&R cups springs/dampers I'm going to be stoked with it I think. To each his own mate. Good luck with your journey.
