Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk1 Golf GTi

Hey All, I just posted this in the facebook group. Thought I'd post it here too.

Engaging reverse in the 5 speed Golf GTi always results in crunching and rarely engaging reverse. Engaging forward gears is fine.

We noticed firewall flex during engagement where the clutch cable and rubber bush meets the firewall and have reinforced this as well as adjusted gear linkages. The issue momentary was fixed (like for a day) but its back again.

    My questions are:

    a) Any suggestions on what it might be? I'm thinking actual gearbox issue.
    b) Any recommendations to whom to take this to?
    c) Anyone know a good manual transmission specialist that might be able to help (East or South East Melb)?

    Any help appreciated.

Sounds like the clutch isn’t fully disengaging and needs adjusting. Try going into 2nd before reverse without letting the clutch up.
