  • Pinkking

Guys my car is pinkking under load.

Seems fine when cold but no so good when warm.

I know these old girls are prone to it.

I have set the timing up 6 deg retarded for unleaded.

Running standard unleaded, not 10% ethanol.

Just increased the ratio of coolant to water.

But still cannot cure it, any advide welcome ?

I'd try higher octane fuel first.

    Other things you could try

    Colder plugs
    enriching the mixture
    Colder thermostat.

I've heard K-jet and water doesn't mix at all. So maybe chuck a cap full of metho down the tank, to "absorb" any moisture...

Other than that, it's possible you've just got a dud tank of gas. Unless this has been happening for a few tanks?

Hmm interesting, slightly scared of doing that, safe you reckon ? Happening for a few tanks.

Thanks for the tips Peter. Anyone advise what fuel to use and from which servo brand ?

Most people recommended big brands, shell, BP etc try whack in some 98 (VPower, or whatever they call it) for petrol.

Or even a bottle of octane booster will lift up the numbers if needed.

I got that metho cap in the tank trick, from a very reliable source. He did it to his car's about once a month, just to stop any water/moisture stuffing up his K-jet.

Unless anyone else has anything bad to say about it?

She is running too lean or isnt happy with the fuel mate. My opinion would be to reset the timing for premium and run it on 98plus. Colder thermostat will lower the core temp of the engine and keep the cyl temps lower but experience with Kjet would say its fuel. They dont like crap fuel and low octane either. Timing and premium would be my first move mate.

Dont run it on 91 octane. Are you crazy?
98 thats it. It costs a bit more, but you go further so it works out the same.
Australia runs on 3rd world petrol, thats why its so cheap. Its actually a couple of octane points lower than european equivilants. Thus aussie 98 is probably the same as German 95 and the 91 you are putting in is really 88.
Lots of euro cars are detuned for aussie petrol when they are shipped here.
Put in the good stuff and I reckon you will notice a difference and will never go back.

I am using standard unleaded, the yellow one, not the ethanol version. I thought that was either 95 or 98 Octane ? But understand what your saying and it makes sense.

Standard unleaded is 91 octane, you shoud try 95 or 98 whichever is the recommended fuel for that car. I'd be certain it would require something higher than 91.

                    Cheers

Your right it does need higher, 98 ideally.

I was unaware standard was 91..

Will top her up as I go and see what happens, maybe add some octane boost while she is full.

Excellent advice guys, that's what makes this forum so great.

i'll probably get grilled by someone for saying this, but the e10 fuel is higher octane, since the ethanol boosts the octane rating.

                        - high compression engines will run better on e10 than regular ulp.

                          No grilling! LOL

I think you are right IIRC E10 is about 95 Octane but I could stand corrected.

Not sure if there are issues with the ethanol content but the octane rating may be.

                              From the Shell website:-

Shell Unleaded E10 Petrol is a high quality unleaded petrol that is formulated
with 10% ethanol. It also contains Shell’s exclusive Fuel Economy Formula
which is designed to take you further by keeping your engine clean and
reducing friction. This fuel will have a minimum octane of 91 in compliance
with federal legislation, but the octane rating will typically be around 94 as a
result of the addition of 10% ethanol to the unleaded petrol.

So if the requirement is 95 or 98 octane E10 does not quite fit the criteria

                              Cheers
