  • 79 gls 3dr - project light

    hello.

thought i'd post my new golf project, hopefully get some idea's for you guys for some direction.

    the plan
get it on the road and running with rust fixed etc...
striped interior with light weight racing seats... mod plated etc...
    light weight battery
painted yellow i think but knowing me that will change.
rims 13" to 15" max... 14's may be a good comprmise
    maybe a enging conversion to either a 1.8 or 2.0 8v engine with a 5 speed
    LPG dedicated!
weighing around 750 but im aiming for less (idealy i would like it to weight 800kg with me and a full tank of gas... i weight 100kg )

    pics...

this is the shear size differance between the golf and my old 1987 Nissan cedric (4.8m long)
    i love it

    john.

Nice one. This should be an interesting project for sure!

And don't paint it yellow. I painted mine yellow, and I'm already looking to change colour!

you might be right... i would like red but i think its over done tho.

im aiming to have my car look something along these lines (this cars got to be my fave, wheel fitment, strech, height are all spot on in my books)

but im also keen to roll the guards like this... but i guess we will see how the wheels fit that ill get for it.

i have some SSR MK2's 14x8.5j +8 that i might be able to use, altho there 114.3 so peding on how far they sit out of the guards... i might get some 100->114.3 wheels spacer converters... 15mm thk. but that makes the wheels stick a fair way out from stock

yea, a +8 offset and a 15mm spacer really wont work... You might have to see about getting them redrilled if it's possible, cause 14x8.5 would be phat!

as for the look, well aim high I always say.

it could work with a bit of to the body... worked it out to be 90mm futher out than the stock rims...

trying to find rims with a decent dish, but high offset and in 100pcd is quite hard, well for the ones i want anyway, found a place that is selling thoes ats classics with free shipping apperently, works out to around 850 delivered.

im guessing to fit 8" on the rear i'd need something around +20...

Sounds like an awesome build in the works. Love dish on mk1s.

If they were my rims I would get them filled and redrilled to 4x100. Could cost up to $500 but so could adapters.

                        looks good
                        gas tanks are heavy
guna make the weight reduction harder
you might have to lose some weight

That's pretty awesome, considering using Megasquirt on it with sequntial injection? That will improve the economy on the LPG, without much HP loss.

I wish I had that shell in my Garage, I have very different plans to yours...

                            thanks guys for the comments

whats this warwick 2008? sounds interesting... will look into it.

i was under the assumption that a gas tank weighted less than a std. fuel tank... ill deff. look into that one.

i want to keep it simple so a megasqurt and injection is alittle out of my price range/skill atm.

i got some of my new wheels from japan today... these are 15x7+0 SSR MKII's and also got some bolt on spacers (for my soarer 4x114.3)

so i had a play and this is what i came up with.

                            15x7's

spacers (there pretty awesome! you get 15mm bolt on section with 3, 5 & 7mm spacers crossed drilled with 4x114.3, 4x100 and something else (so i could use thoes spacers just not the bolted 15mm bit)

15x7+0 + 15mm spacer (effective offset of -15)... i like how much it sits out of the guards, altho the legalness and finding a tyre to strech onto this would be hard. 175/50 maybe? would like this but maybe with 8j+20 offset to start with.

it would be good if i could find some rims in 4x114.3 to use, ive found some spacers and they would cost me 400max. for a set of 4.

Nice build, love your wheel choice. If you still have the 8,5 wide mk-twos laying around, would you be interested in selling them ?
