  • Unleaded into Diesel Tank

So much for my trouble free motoring dreams, At least this isn't VW's issue

Get a call from my wife about what to do if someone hypothetically put the wrong fuel in a car......

She stopped at 8L of BP ultimate.... Unleaded.

At least she had the presence of mind not to just fill with diesel on top.
Got her towed to local garage and they are sussing out what to do now.

Car was not started but keys did go in to put in neutral & disengage park brake.

Does anyone know the best process as these guys are not VW mechanics. They are proposing to syphon out tank measuring what comes out. Then just top up and run it.

You won't syphon it via the filler neck.

Will ned to be pumped out. Also baring in mind that these are a saddle tank, so both sides will need to be emptied.

Pain in the backside, but not the end of the world.

He looked at the tank and said exactly that.

They are going to try a jiggler and syphon what they can out. Then suggested filling with diesel and that's it.

Went with local mechanic as My local vw dealer said they can't look at it for a week.

Should I recommend them to pump it?

I've done the same thing myself. If it hasn't been run on unleaded, all you need to do is empty, refill and away you go. Lesson learned.

But, yes, I'd check that they meant to say "filled with diesel", but that's what it looks like.

Maybe you could ask for a rebate on the ULP they took out?

I generally pay 1.3 - 1.37 every time. Outside metro it drops to 1.18 or thereabouts.

My wife put 18 litres of ulp into her Jetta 125TDI. Luckily (or unluckily depending on which way you look at it) she was topping up the tank before she headed off on a trip. She drove about 14 kilometres and when she noted that it was running a bit funny she suddenly realised what she had done. By the time she rang me, while still driving, she was virtually home. So she drove nearly 20 k's in total. We then got it towed to my mate's place. He took out the in tank fuel pump to drain the tank. We put diesel into it and away she went. Got lucky I think but it does show that they are still a pretty robust engine. At around 230,000k's at the time.

This is becoming so common that RACQ here in QLD now have a fleet of fuel extraction vans. They specialise in fixing unleaded in a diesel.
They have all the gear to pump empty the tank and flush the fuel lines, then replace the fuel filters etc.

We have been consistently at 1.24-1.29 here in Canberra for the last 6-12 months (which has been 0.1 cheaper than regular unleaded and 0.25 cheaper than premium).

I bought an adapter for my wifes ix35 highlander so she couldn't put petrol in it, and chipped her whenever she mentions the word petrol.

I'm a tanker driver and see this quite regularly, amazingly I have seen people trying to blame the servo for their error. General consensus is if you just drain it without running it no problems. driving it with a petrol blend can quite easily destroy your engine.

Another error is people with diesels filling their fuel tanks with Adblue , workmates mate did this and destroyed his Nissan Patrol's engine.

Interesting to hear from an ‘admitted’ tanker driver. Do you only ever use BP Ultimate in your vehicle?.
