Remaining Distance very innacurate?

I've got a 2006 Golf MK5 TDI ( no DPF ) and I've noticed that when I fill up, it will estimate about 700km left to be travelled, but in reality, my fuel light will come on when I've only driven about 500km...

Is this normal? If not, what can I do to fix it ?
I mean I've heard people get up to 800km on a tank, but i can barely reach 600km
(Though I do tend to take shorter trips, but I dont think it should cause THAT much inaccuracy? )

Read the owners manual but I bet there's close to 100km once the light comes on. My Polo GTI reads 0km and I'll happily go another 40-50km.

Short journeys will impact consumption. Is there a computer on the dash on yours?

The DTE is an estimate as you state. When the tank is full it's usually quite optimistic - I know mine says 800-900km but usually a full tank 850 at most and more usually around 700-750.

The fuel light will come on at 1/8th of a tank (around 80-110km to empty). You'll probably get that if you are willing to run the tank dry but none of us actually do that.

Your best idea is to fill up as soon as possible after the light comes on.

As for "I only get X km / tank". It really means nothing. You should measure it tank to tank in L/100km for an accurate measure of fuel consumption.

Short trips will use lots of fuel.

The maxidot instant fuel consumption is a toy for entertainment purposes.
It doesn't know, thus take into account, what gear you're in......it'll say best economy is in, say, 60kph in fourth as opposed to 80 in 6th frinstance......if you've got a 'box' fitted, it's much worse.
fill to fill.....the rest is self deluding.

Petrol Peugeot 1000 + fm 53L tank.
Diesel Yeti, at best 1000 (just) fm 62L tank.

But it's an OCD!.

Golf Mk6 TDi: 1050km mainly highway 55l (according to the pump I filled at)

Your type and manner of driving is THE most important factor.
You simply can't compare flat country cruising with city stop/start.
It's the brake usage and speed that determines what you're consumption will be.....plus weight, drag fm pack racks etc
Fill to fill is the real test of economy.

I usually get about 830km with a 49-50 litre fill.

I had thought that the DTUK 'economy' box I put on my Yeti was the reason it was occasionally 'surging' under certain conditions eg @ 90kph on dead flat and straight roads the tacho would occasionally jump around between 1700 and 1800 rpm....I now think the very specific 'economy' driving style was activating bursts of 'emmissions testing bypass' programming as the DTUK supplier had never heard of such behaviour from their 'box' from other owners.
The actual economy figures didn't seem to alter much but when provoked it certainly gave at least 125 type power from the 103.

Those sorts of economy boxes are marketed with that name so you can more easily justify expenditure to the wife (or oneself). I think it's really about the powaaa

There was the choice of a 'power' one but I chose the economy one and still got predominantly (only?) power.
I think each time it 'surged' it went into polluting mode and when cc overrode it it went into 'fake' mode and so on and on ......
