  • the mk5 tdi daily hack

With the cabriolet moving onto a new home, and a baby on the way in our home, its time to unveil my new daily hack:

Its an '05 build, 2.0, 6 speed man, Comfortline with 'bone' leather interior. Just a baby with 250,000km

It was bone stock when we picked it up apart from an aftermarket double din HU. Since then I have fitted some 17x7.5 ET43 MAK wheels that my folks had lying around with some new tyres and thats it.

Apart from that all I've done is give it a massive clean inside and start detailing the exterior, which is not high on my list of priorities really.

I have to say I'm a fan of the 2.0l, its a much more enjoyable engine than the 1.9 8V and seems still as economical.

Not much in the way of plans for it apart from keeping it tidy and 'touge'!

I am very happy with my '06 manual 2.0TDI. In fact I prefer driving it to our Tiguan manual TDI. Did you get any service history with the car?
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Awesome, great little beast, and no DPF!

Provent and inlet flush, at 250 she'd have a bit of the black cholesterol.

Oh and congrats on knocking up the missus, pretty impressive given your modest equipment

Yes, a very good service history - appears the car has been mostly serviced by Canberra VW centre.

Yeah I havent opened up the inlet for a look yet, but it does look as though its had a new ASV in the last year, as its super shiny. It does have plenty of power though, so I dont think its as clogged as it could be. It certainly hasnt been a town car, so it should have stayed pretty clean being driven on boost most of the time.

As to your other comment... thanks, I think

Not having paid much gives a feeling of freedom from worry.

Picked up some cheap GTI calipers/carriers on ebay

(here I go again, this car doesnt need new brakes, they are perfect!)

Of course, everyone needs nolathane bushings in a daily:

I did some engine bay detailing a few weeks back, still looks good apart from the smudges on my engine cover!

seriously though - the nolathane bushings are fantastic. I put a superpro Supalloy wishbone kit in the Octavia when I owned it, and to be honest for the money, for a road car, its about 6 times better value to buy Nolathane bushings instead. The nolathane bushings are a little harder to get in, as the fronts seem a little fatter (lengthways, not bore size) than the superpro - but apart from that the net effect for driving feel is identical and it also feels like there is a little less NVH with the nolathane + stock steel wishbones, vs the supalloy wishbone kit.

I would also tentatively say that the nolathanes are making the ride even a bit nicer than stock, since theres no stored energy in the bushings.

for $100 all up, you cant go wrong really.
