Initial Oil Change

My 130TDi Passat is coming up to 5000 km where my dealer offers a complimentary inspection. I asked for them to do an oil change but was told it would void the warranty as the oil is a special running-in oil that has to get changed at 15000 km.

My experience is that you can never change your oil too regularly as long as it is the correct oil.

I plan on changing it myself if they won't to get rid of all the initial muck from the running-in phase.

Is this plan a good move, or is the dealer correct?

This is my first Vdub and first diesel, so not sure if the basic rules of engines changes due to make and type.

The engines are supposedly already run-in at the factory. I still changed mine's oil at 5000k's...

Was told at Bayfords at Camberwell that the initial oil that comes in a new car is no different to the subsequently used 504/507 oils. Seems like different people tell us different things...

There is no need to change the oil earlier than 15 000 km, but if you do, it is highly unlikely the warranty would then be void.

If you look on TDIClub Forums in America, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that a 10 000 mile (15 000 km) is a suitable oil change interval for VW 504.00/507.00 oils, especially since the introduction of ultra-low sulphur diesel in the US (15 ppm) and sulphur-free diesel in Europe and Australia (10 ppm).

A 5 000 km interval is too short. You can consider changing it at 7 500 km intervals if you wish, but again, I would refer you to my previous comment.

Using oils approved to VW standard 504.00/507.00 is of course mandatory.

In the meantime, keep an eye on the oil level. It is best for the engine to keep it near the MAX mark (especially over long service intervals) and avoid overfilling.

I do recommend changing the oil earlier. The 5,000km is long enough if anybody is worried that the engine would not run in, if oil changed earlier. In all our family VW's I did oil change between 1000-2000km and I can't see any ill affects. The younger car is 2012 Tiguan TDI and the oil was changed at 2000km and it was reasonably clean for the diesel, but the same oil is used in the factory, so there is no harm in changing your oil as often as you like.

Just make sure you buy the APPROVED OIL
Like Penrite Enviro + or Shell ultra EXTRA or the Castrol the dealer sells for $93.
The filter the VW dealer sells is best and not all that expensive

That's what I plan on doing. Just been checking on the quantity required and spec. For me it's either Shell Helix Ultra Extra from Supercheap or Castrol from the dealer. Has anyone found one to be better than the other?

Shell used to sponsor me, so I have a soft spot for Shell.

From experience, two things can meet the same specification but one can still be better than the other.

FWIW, my dealer has used used Castrol Edge Professional for all changes, except 30,000km (SLX Pro LL2 ). Most recent service was 75,000km, still hasn't blown up.

Conversly I have had bad experience with Shell in the past where a car that didn't normally use any oil used to drink Helix.

I have used both the Castrol and the Penrite with no differences in consumption so go with the Penrite at $66-69 (on special) against Castrol at $93. Neither car has ever had to be topped up between changes and both run well so that's good enough for me.

Bayford Epping has the genuine Castrol for $84.21 inc. which is not too bad I guess.

Went to do the change then come across the overkill of the century. Is VW serious about the bolts used to hold the rear of the under tray guard? Without using stands or a hoist, I cannot see what else they're holding together.
