  • OIL LEAK?? 2011 MK6 Golf 103 TDi

    Hey All,

Just thought I'd post this question up as driving to work this afternoon, I got a call from my partner at home saying check you car as there is oil on the garage floor where your car was parked. I pulled into a servo to get fuel so had a look to see where it was coming from. I could see on the drivers side underneath the front of the car where it was coming through the black plastic undercar trim panels. I had a look in the engine bay to see if I could see anything but I couldn't see anything. I checked the oil in the car even thouhg I had just being driving and it was fine according to the dipstick. The amount of oil that was on the garage floor was quite significant for the 12 hour period the car was sitting in the garage. I have spoken to my local VW and it is going in there first thing in the morning to be looked at, hopefully nothing major. I was just curious to know if anyone else has had oil leaks in a MK6 2011 Golf or if anyone has any idea on what it could possibly be? I have just clicked over 86000 K's, car is always serviced on schedule etc.

    Cheers
    Willo

Would that be where it is located or near? It's drivers side near the wheel...

Well after a visit to the dealership, turns out it is the crank seal. So booked in for next Thursday to have it replaced.. Hopefully all will be fine until then..

So the golf went in yesterday to be repaired. They pulled the necessary parts off to replace the crankshaft seal which was leaking. VW said that the seal had failed, and that sometimes they work and sometimes they don't and they fail. However thankfully that they had to pull it apart for the leak, they seen that the water pump was leaking and therefore saved me a second trip in and replaced it too. Bit interesting for a new car that so much is going wrong with it. Fingers crossed thats it for now lol.

                    sounds like a Friday car
                    Glad it's getting sorted.

wow, thats a weird one on a new car. VW have been slowly modifiying their oil seals over the years to make them cheaper, I wonder if its a sign of the times....

All the oil seals used to be proper synthetic polymer seals with a metallic spring and reinforcement, that got pressed into the alloy housings. Then in the 2000's they started making the housing and oil seal one part, and the oil seal was more lightly built, with a fibrous impregnation in the polymer rather than a spring to keep it tight on the rotating shaft. Cheaper and lighter..... maybe not as reliable?

Glad you got your problem sorted though

I guess that could be true, would make sense.
