  • Oil pump failure on some models of 2.0TDI engines.

In the Sept. edition of Volkswagen Driver magazine there is a page devoted to a drive failure to the oil pump.It affects engines from 2005 onwards, Audi codes BLB,BPW,BRE,BNA etc & VW codes BKP,BMA etc. "The introduction of the balancer shafts to improve the refinement of the later engines required the oil pump to be relocated & driven directly from the second balancer shaft using a short 6mm hexagonal shaft". Apparently failure can occur from around 70,000 miles.
I have checked, & my 2006 BKD engine still has the chain drive from the crankshaft but I was wondering if anyone on this site has heard of this & whether any of the above engine codes were/are imported here.

they probably have been, but if they are the balance shaft versions then they are probably only in passats.

I'm not certain but I don't think that the golfs were given the balance shaft engines.

There was a campaign where the gears on the balancer shaft and oil pump were replaced. This was only on Passats.

Not a huge job, but you had to take the sump off to do it.

Can't remember what the engine code was, though.

As always, if you're not sure, ring your preferred VW dealership service department, provide them with your VIN, and get them to check if there are any outstanding campaigns on the car.

Apparently the hex drive wears causing slippage or complete loss of drive. If you notice the oil pressure light come on & stop straight away you may be OK. If you don't it's all over.
