  • Help with diesel 2.0 and exhaust.

Hey I'm going to do an exhaust on my mkv TDI...

Every time I see someone with an exhaust they smoke like crazy? What is it that causes this? Because they are straight thru? Do the mufflers reduce/cut out the smoke? Stock I have absolutely zero smoke.

Also can't find a dump pipe for the TDI's anywhere other than the UK why? Also worth getting a dump pipe or?

its either because they have a tune to go with the exhaust or they have a high flow cat, either way that's why they smoke. Your car will soot, but you just don't notice it. Muffler's don't preform any smoke reduction (unless some gets absorbed into the factory glass pack, but I don't see that happening).

The reason why you can't find one in Aus is because diesel tuning just isn't a bit thing here like it is over in the UK. A dump pipe will be worth it for flow reason alone, easier spool etc.

For petrol engines, black smoke may be caused by excessively rich fuel mixtures.

For diesel engines without a particulate filter (i.e. your car), black smoke is normal.

The only way to eliminate black smoke from your diesel engine is to retrofit a particulate filter.

Thanks guys, so just getting a tune will give me more smoke or noticeable smoke? looks like I'm not getting a tune
Dump pipe doesn't alter the smoke more or less? Because I want to get one eventually...

yes it will. Why did you buy a diesel if you are so worried about smoke?

I understood it that because you had a tune, the setup wasn't as rich, so there is less smoke?

Help with diesel 2.0 and exhaust.

Golfman I was so happy to find when I got my golf it didn't smoke because that aswell as the sound where the only 2 things that bothered me....I really wanted to get a tune to bring the TDI the GTI power as that's what I originally wanted but due to P plates cannot drive a GTI. And now learning that if I do one I get the other make a little annoyed i might have to leave the tune alone I guess

Help with diesel 2.0 and exhaust.

It's only after I saw mk5 TDI's video on his face book that it really annoyed me... Watching Adrian's video I was fine with just that and could deal with that but not literally only being able to see 1/4 of the car because the rest is simply a cloud...

The Golf VI is fitted with a particulate filter, which means you'll never see any emission of soot from the exhaust.

I know I can have a mk4 GTI but when I looked about 6 months ago couldn't have mk5 GTI... Gonna murder someone if you can have one now...

Haha don't know why you would worry over sooting, it's the best!!!
I love covering cars in it if they sit to close or tailgate me

Mine has been tuned and runs a straight through exhaust and points to the rear not downwards, it became a little more sooty when it was tuned but from factory it was still really sooty.

Us diesel freaks are all about the soot!

More fuel = more power = more smoke!

Some tuners offer 'economy' based maps which won't result in as much smoke as a tune going for the most power. Just get it done, it turns the mk5 tdi into a fairly rapid car.
MKV Golf 2.0 TDI DSG Sportline. Just nice.
