  • GT1749VA - What's it worth?

I recently pulled a VT1749 off my MkV Golf as it needs a thorough clean and I can't afford the downtime so replaced it.

What would it be worth used?

    Hi Quentin,

I too have a used turbo sitting in the shed.

The problem is that the there are two reasons someone might buy our turbos.

    1. To replace a smaller turbo on another engine.
    2. To replace a blown turbo.

The problem with No. 1 is that there isn't a massive diesel modding scene in AUS. Even if there was, whoever purchased it is taking a bit of a risk and would likely need/get the turbo rebuilt anyway.

The problem with No. 2 is that people will only really replace the turbo once it goes. When it goes, people will generally take it to a dealer and pay a ridiculous price as they don't know better. Even if they did purchase our turbo's they'd generally need/get them rebuilt anyway. This all takes time and most of the time we're talking about peoples daily drivers.

I dont think we'd get much to be honest.

Having said that, there might be some merit in giving your local VW mechanic (no dealership) and having a chat about it. You might be able to organise them to buy it - if you rebuild it?

I paid $100 for a 'blown' 1749VB (broken turbine blades).

For an unknown condition apparrently working VA, I might be prepared to pay $2-300, probably not any more.... have a look on ebay - you can get random used turbo's for about that and less - thats the market you are in.

Having said that, put it up forsale in the classifieds section and see what happens.

Would be a great turbo for someone with a mk1,2 or 3 diesel wanting to do a project, or even a good swap option for someone that might only want a little more from their 1.9 (caddy owners for instance).

PS - if you didnt realise from what I just mentioned - the turbo will physically fit all common VW 8V engines (petrol and diesel) and all the later diesel 4cyl engines (all have the same exhaust port shape and spacing)

        Thanks for that folks.

It is in reasonable condition, I would say with the vanes "de-sooted" it would be a reasonable turbo. I wasn't really expecting the earth for it, just curious what it might be worth.
