Upgrade advice for a noob????

Hi guys,
I'm new here and I'm just checking to see if I'm on the right track with a couple of things.

I have a 2006 1.9TDI DSG Comfortline and looking to do a little upgrading. Please bare in mind that this car has only done 50000 km's and is in really good condition. I've thought long and hard about first upgrading to a another Golf that already has more performance but I think a little more power/cosmetic changes will get me a couple more good years of use out of it before I pass it on. I only do about 500 km's a month; so hard to justify an expensive car in the garage doing nothing. Sorry for the long intro

I live in Brisbane and have had the following quotes for upgrades:

1. Oetlinger ECU flash. Gains of ~26kW/60Nm. $1350 inc GST and labour. Any comments on this?
2. VW racing springs. 30mm drop from standard. $590 inc GST and labour. Any comments on this? The car has the Mk5 era 17" EOS/Passat rims on it at the moment which I'm going to keep.

Hey Chris, Welcome to the forum.

There's plenty of other flash options, any particular reason for picking Oettinger?

I'd always fit a full suspension kit, chances are the shocks will be past their best. Also, std damping rates often can't cope with the uprated spring rate.

Thanks for the reply/advice Gavin. No real reason for the Oettinger flash. They can do the Oettinger flash where I service my car so that's the only reason at this stage. It seemed like a reasonable price and I haven't heard anything bad about Oettinger. I think I saw a post on here saying somebody with the same engine was really happy with it. Do you have any info you could send me for Custom Code flashes? Interested in seeing the options.

This should be the one for your Golf at $799. Much the same numbers, try and don't like it, I'll refund you in full.

Bluefin (plus a K&N flat panel filter) $575 plus shipping (from the UK, about $40) on ebay. A bit more modest than the one above so perhaps easier to live with?

Gonna be a rough ride if you do that suspension.

Would a set of second hand GTI springs or something similar be a better option? GTI springs are only a 15mm drop from standard.

When I bought my car the previous owner had fitted some low springs (about 30-35mm), the car has a GTI body kit (also from the previous owner) and the front skirt scraped on several inconvenient places – like my own drive way and the entrance to child care – so 4-5 times a day.

Just after I got it, about 5 yrs ago, I swapped them for genuine GTI springs and struts, much nicer ride, just high enough to clear essentials and still a huge handling improvement over standard. Picked them up 2nd hand out of a near new car. Have a chat to some of the shops that are fitting new suspension for VWs (like independent VW mechanics), most people just leave their old ones behind - memory serves me I paid $150 for springs, and he had 4 near new sets lying around.

Cheers harlie, I think that's the way I go probably. I don't want to drop it too low. Just put the wheels a bit closer into the arches. I would be happy with the GTI like height that maintained a decent ride. I'll see if I can find some springs around.
