  • Considering a 2L Diesel - Discussion and help

    I'm fairly new to this section, but certainly not to the forum. Currently driving a Polo GTI (1.8T version). Few light mods (well, more than a couple but stock turbo).

    Whilst I love my toy, I do like the way the Diesels move and it looks like I'll be doing more distance driving in the near future and will be moving around some very ordinary Sydney roads, so the tight ride of my Polo with coilovers, sways, lower profile rims, etc is not ideal...

    So, to start with, what are my options when it comes to the 2L? The Mk5 Golfs I believe were the first to start with the 2L, Guess I should also consider Audi, Skoda's probably have not been here long enough to come into my price range...

    I'd be looking for a cost-swap to start with, so something in the 15-18K moneys.

    Looking forward to learning more about the Sooty style and maybe even migrating over...

    2.0L come in bog standard 103kw TDI
    or the 125TDI (125kW) TDI in the Golf GTD and Jetta 125TDI Highline (Passat 125TDI also)

    older Mk5 TDI were PD (Pump Duse) injection TDI's (including some of the 125TDI)
    Newer TDI's like my 2011 Mk5 Jetta 125TDI are CR (Common Rail) TDIs, - and have DPF (diesel Particuale Filters)

    For your price range you will be looking at the 103kW 2.0L TDI from about 2005-2008
    They are good strong engines without the DPF

    In Later Years there are other TDI's, you got to look at the engine specs as there are 77kW 1.9L and also 1.6L so just don't look at kW or the TDI badge.
    Also some dealers incorrectly advertise the TDI cars engines in their ads.

      Thanks mate, that is a very helpful start.
      Ive played on the roads with the GTD, nice toys...

      Think I'll look into what a chipped TDI can do, do intake and exhaust mods count for much? Are there Diesel specific mods that make a big difference (looks like I won't have to worry about the DPF on it)

        1st mod is put on a Provent200 to filter out the PCV oil vapours.

        Chip is the best power mod you can do. There are a few threads on here already but Custom Code have been good to a few people.

        An Intake will only cost you money and look good... it will not improve things. Stock Airbox and Panel filter will flow more than enough air.

        Don't waste your money on a fancy exhaust... unless you want to do a TDI downpipe. just do a straight through 2 1/2in from the turbo/cat back to get rid of the mufflers (mullerectomy). it will sound better but not loud or obnoxious but if you want to make it quieter like stock put a straight through muffler somewhere.

        Pretty much all you can do unless you want to start deleting EGR's etc

          Right at the moment there seem to be bugger all Skoda's in the second hand market - however, I picked up mine last year for 18k with 90,000km on it (still a baby)

          However, I've been watching out on carsales for the last year and octavia TDI's are popping in and out there for anywhere between 10 -20k usually, so dont rule it out too early (particularly if you think you need more boot space)

          (PS - ofcourse there are plenty of dealer ones on carsales for 25k+, I'm not counting those).

            Yeah the EGR return system scares me a little, I know my car pretty well, ran a catch can for a period, this and the DPF seem to be the downside of o VAG Diesel.

            Interesting about the Octavia, Skoda design is to taste, I might find one near me to try, see if I can be converted.

              I just bought a GTD to go alongside my GTI Pirelli (The GTD being my daily driver), and I gotta tell ya I just love it to bits.

              The GTI is good if you really want to get on it (Mine has a stage III kit in it), but the GTD is perfect as a commuter. Still has the fun factor of the GTI, but it so much smarter and economical. These new CR diesels really are something to praise.

              If you've driven a GTD you know what it's all about. Not a huge amount you can do, I'll be getting the APR chip for mine once it's available (coming soon) - other than that i'm going to leave it alone. It's otherwise perfect just as it is.

              Mind you, that's what I said about the Pirelli before I dumped a third-world nation's level of debt into it...... *sigh*

              Buy it, love it. Just don't try and turn it onto a fire breathing performance car - coz ya know, it's a diesel.... The sound the GTDs make is quite infectious though. I was quite pleasantly surprised when I heard how 'hot' it sounds...

                Do you need a larger car (or the larger engine)?

                Or maybe raise your coilovers for a while and ease off the anti-roll bar settings?

                  I'm looking toward a larger hatch, ute or wagon, but asside from needing a bit more space, I would like to have a Diesel for a while (still want a V8 at some point in my life).

                  Was looking towards a Holden Ford Ute, but their fuel consumption seems crazy even when doing freeway speeds.

                  TDI Octavia, A4 Wagon or Mk5 TDI are currently on my shortlist to look at, but I'm not really in any rush.

                    just thinking about what you just said about utes etc....

                    just after I picked up my skoda, I saw an audi allroad 2.7 TDI on carsales for 17.5k......kind of like all cars in one

                        You can have both V8 and diesel as well, just wait for a new Touareg with V8TDI.

                        Now seriously, the 2.0L TDI BKD should give a good 131kW when remapped and that's without any other mods.

                          What I meant was there's far fewer options and if ultimate HP in a Golf was your goal, then a diesel is not a good idea.

                          Yeah those Audi R10 TDI's are amazing. Love the sound of them..

                            Can I suggest this car? Skoda Octavia 4x4 TDI. 2008 model with 88,000kms $20,000. Been on carsales for a month or two. Heaps of pricey options, including xenon lights and leather seats. Wish I'd seen it before I got mine in Feb. Put in a Bluefin ($600ish) for 132kw/395nm (up from the standard 103/320).

                            I have nothing to do with the seller, just reckon it's a nice car.
