in need of advice!! new to diesel engines

hi guys, just recently bought a golf tdi mk5!!! #happyboy

anyway straight to the problem, ive looked around and know that diesels smells... but should it be a really strong smell?
cos my missus complain that it smells really bad.. and i believe that thats a normal diesel smell...

also ive noticed that the car smokes when i accelerate, i thought that it was just the unburnt fuel.. but other saying it could be the turbo (also new to turbo cars as well). the funny thing is was that when i put it in park, and go behind the car to have a proper examination while the missus steps on the pedal, there seems to be only smoke coming out when shes flooring it.. so the problem occurs while im driving not when parked.. #strange

i am going to have it checked out later today by my mechanic.
just wondering if this is a common issue with other golf tdi's or any turbo diesel cars.

i also come to term that, i MIGHT need to change the EGR or DPF.. and how would that usually cost? to fix.

just some details about the car...
2008 golf TDi mk5
120,000km on the clock
just serviced (oil + oil filter)
replacing timing belt this week.
was damaged from the back.

Welcome to the learning curve.

You car does not have a DPF, hence the soot when you floor it. All diesels do that, just the later ones with a particle filter trap that obvious soot. Yep diesels smell different, best not to go out of your way to do so.

Yep the soot is unburnt fuel .At idle there is no load on the car, so it has no need to inject much fuel, this no soot. On the road, with load, it has to inject more fuel, so when you step on it, the more soot produced.

Very normal diesel behaviour.

haha i actually do not mind it.. its just the missus..

anyway i just to audvolks, in melbourne and he ran diagnostic checks on the car apparently it is not the EGR but
hes booked me in to remove the EGR and see if there is a mechanical fault.

btw i dont think a cloud of smoke when i drive off is normal lol, the poor cars behind me all i can see if smoke all over their windscreen :\

forgot to update, there IS smoke coming out when idle, not a lot though.

Try injector cleaner/fuel additive first. Maybe the previous owner never used additive in the tank. I use Moreys Diesel SMoke Killer at every fill up, that helps a lot. For initial clean up I recommend BG 244K (it may be hard to get-not in retail stores) or Liqui Moly - this brand you can get from Supercheap and Autobarn.

On a more serious note, I doubt a faulty egr valve would cause the smoke.

What color is the smoke at idle?

getjet, LOL!! i wish... yeah the guy at audvolks says the same, and its white smoke at idle??
and my mate a mechanic says that... white smoke = cars ****ed (blown head gasket or turbo whatever)
but then reassured me that it could also be the diesel filter? water mixing with the diesel causing the smokes?

anyway its going to come down to a RIDICULOUS amount of cash to fix FML

Maybe there is nothing to fix.
The white smoke from the exhaust could be just normal condensation (moisture from air) on cold winter day. The PD diesel engines can be a bit smoky.

A bit of black smoke when you floor it is normal... You should see the state of tuned gtis. Mine is worse than an old Massey ferguson under WOT!

White smoke is a worry though.. Might be worth checking....

Smell? What smell? We have 2 tdi's in the family and neither have any smell whatsoever? Must be a non dpf thing?

massive amateur mistake!
it is blue smokes... bloody hell they all look the same.. anyway yeah blue smokes.
took it for a drive today in the mountains, noticeable smoke coming out when i drive it,

Not much to vorry about.
You will notice it more at the night when you look at the rear view mirror while the car drives behind the headlights make the smoke more visible then.

Sometimes oil that accumulate in the intake and the intercooler adds to the blue smoke. Clean the intake and install the Provent200.

The new common rail diesels have next to no smoke and barely any smell. Very clean engines.
