  • Anyone had G235 EGT sensor fail?

I'm getting an intermittent fault on G235 (scanned with VCDS), the temp sensor before the turbo. Glow plug light comes up and the check engine/workshop message comes up.

VCDS is reading 1000/1024 degs. Fairly sure this is not the actual temperature but the sensor has failed. Weird though it only happens when I put my foot down, but you can see the other 2 temp sensors aren't going very high.

So yeah just wondering if anyone has replaced one before. The part number is 03L 906 088 BS and its listed at around $200 in ETKA. I wonder if any other part numbers are compatible.

I would log the output during a drive to be sure. It should be smooth and vary between 150-200C at warm idle, and getto 3-400 C during normal driving whilst accelerating. During a hard pull I would not want to see it go over 850. If it was really reading 1000C, you would be in major trouble (melted pistons etc).

They are a resistance based sensor but I would think if it was going to fail it would go way out of range. Also, I'm not sure that it is, but I would expect it to be basically just a k-type thermocouple.

I replaced one last week in Scout TDI BMM engine. I'm sure it's the same sensor, it's quite common failure. Disconnect the sensor’s connector, connect a new sensor or 220ohm resistor and check the measuring block 067, it should be showing ambient temperature.

I've put 3 in the same Caddy.

Not sure what the go was there.

I did read that you have to be gentle with the wiring, but I was certain that didn't atribute to subsequent failures.

Thanks guys, seems like it is very common. Hopefully I only have to replace mine once.

I have logged it and yeah it jumps up to 1000, I was basically just worried something had gone horribly wrong and it actually was getting that hot.

I hope its not a pain to get at.

                  It is a big pain.

It's buried in amongst the turbo.

Ah crap. I wonder if I even need it since I no longer have a DPF. I could map the engine light out and save myself $230.

To undo it, you may need 17mm crows foot spanner - slimmer the better. I always remove the EGR pipe for easier access. When you installing it, don't bother with the 17mm crows foot, just use 17mm short spanner.

I would keep a pre-turbo EGT sensor if you're keen on tuning (and you are )

                          Transporters method is spot on.

Although i didnt need a crows foot. Once the EGR pipe was off it was fairly easy with a spanner.

Takes bout half hour on a hoist. Book time is 90time units (54 minutes)

Thanks Transporter, might just totally remove the cooler if I can. Its not in service any more anyway.

Yeah its probably best I have a way of measuring EGTs

Please, this is not sarcasm on my part - beleive me - but - the dealer has its own unit of time? Normal time not good enough eh?

Sounds like something from a Monty Python skit

(ps, I realise its 100seconds/unit.... just makes me laugh is all)

are the lunch breaks also measured in time units?
