My MK5 Golf (40,000 ks) has oil leaking from the ducting to the intercooler. Has anyone had this happen, if so is it easily fixed or is it a major drama? Thanks in advance, Dennis.

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

yeah dont stress. when i took things apart to "clean" my intercooler, there was oil everywhere - in the intercooler, in the pipework etc etc...
it's no big deal. doesnt affect things at all (apart from the egr discussion).
you could take apart the pipework and clean the intercooler etc, but literally within 5 minutes of running the engine it'll be just as dirty again.
it's not an issue that you need concern yourself with.

The vast majority comes from engine blow by, the tube that feeds into the inlet just before the turbo. Fitting a Provent 200 oil catch can is highly recommended. There is always a little loss from the turbo itself, but how VW can consider this "fine" is beyond me, as not only does oil coat the inside of your intercooler, bit it combines with the equally nasty exhaust gas recycled near the manifold, and gums the entire thing up. This is the biggest problem, but fitting a quality catch can, flushing out the engine with some Subaru upper intake cleaner, and restricting the EGR eration all help keep your diesel running the way it should. They all do that. There is the tray under the engine that catches the drips that happen once in the blue moon, so majority of owners don't know about it. It is on many other brands like that and low viscosity engine oil contributes to it.
