    BP's response

I should have put the reply here rather tham MKV ...but anyway, I just spoke to BP and they said end of October ...and it no pricing yet, but would probably be a few cents a litre more. Hopefully my next fill will be th Ultimate, so I'll keep you posted.

      New BP Diesel Price

We have been driving a Touareg for a week so are still trying to empty the tank in the Jetta. Had to fill up ...sorry top up the Treg, so put some of the new Ultra Diesel in ...... $1.40.3 a litre at BP Myaree (that's about 4c a litre dearer than the old diesel). I only hope it gives better economy. I asked the attendant if they had the normal diesel as well and she said "no". I'll keep you up to date when I fill up the Jetta.

          Closing in on $1.50

Now done 7000klm. I went back to fill up for tank 2 on BP Ultimate yesterday. $1.48.6c per litre. I can get normal diesel for $1.38 elsewhere - that's $5 difference. Anyway it returned 6.3l/100klm from the 1st tank of Ultimate. I really didn't feel the difference in acceleration - but then why would I want to accelerate faster ....and use more fuel. Derr. I bought a diesel to use less not more. That said I'm filling up for one more try for the better economy.

That is right, but even if you get better economy from this, you will still have to pay more for it, so you are not saving much. did you notice any difference in engine noise, does it run more smootly, etc?

as I understood it, the new diesel has a lower sulphur content and as a result emits less nasties into the atmosphere when burnt. I would assume that Perth is the trial city to make sure that the lower sulphur content doesn't destroy engines.

I wouldn't expect any better economy as such but just a cleaner fuel. I surmise that once this is nationwide we will see more highly tuned diesels being imported from eurorpe. the higher cetane rating of this diesel will allow this.

Would I be correct in assuming that unless the vehicle is retuned ther ewould be only negligable benefits of filling up with this fuel. kinda like putting ultimate into an 84 corolla?

                BP Ultimate Update

When I usually fill up and drive away the readout usually indicates 870klm to go on the tank. After running 3 tanks of BP Ultimate Diesel, I switched back to normal Shell through necessity - otherwise I would have run out. I didnt fill right up, but rather left it when it cut out. When I drove awy this time the readout said 850 left to go, which is understandable.

However after driving 200 klm on Shell the readout is still saying 750 to go. Never before have I been that high in total (950) driving around the city.

I can't really say if there is any noise difference with the BP nor the get up and go, but maybe the BP does "clean" the engine, hence the better economy going back to Shell ....Now done 8000 klm

no thats not correct. lower sulfur is always going to be better economy and always better for the engine. sulfur doesnt help the combustion process and dirties up your engine.

                    Interesting Jan.

Maybe some when can tell us how the MFD calculates the distance to empty.
I don't believe it has anything to do with the fuel quality.
I'm thinking it depends on your prior driving just before filling up as my
reading has always shown over 1000km to go, but I always fill up at the end
of the Fwy when my average has been sitting on low 5's.

I have been using this in my 103kW Passat for a few months now. Can't say that I have noticed many benefits over the standard stuff tho.. My fuel economy around town is low 7's and on the open road is low 6's.

                      Anyone else noticed any benefits?

You're right. But from what I have read about Diesel here in Aus on the Fuel websites (Shell, BP, Caltex) all of their standard diesel fuels are "Low Sulphur" but that is more to do with Aus fuel regulation.

While Perth is enjoying BP Ultimate, in Sydney you can get Caltex's Vortex Premium Diesel.

                        http://www.caltex.com.au/assets/VortexDieselSites.pdf

The info on the website is all marketing bollocks really but the attendant at Gladesville told me it was just a higher cetane rating.

The price difference? Compared to my local stations (who are 50m apart so the competition keeps the prices decent) is it only around 2-3c more.

Economy and Performance? Well this is only my second tank but I think the economy is a little better, maybe 20-40 km and as for performance, who knows.

It just makes sense to get the best grade fuel for you car, that's why I do it

I think it's exactly the same diesel as the non-ultimate version so therefore shouldn't be any cleaner.

They just put an additive into it to boost the cetane rating a bit. It's just like the additve that brings petrol up to a higher octane rating.

                            Justified or not?

                            BP was selling Ultimate at 179.9 yesterday. Generally it is 5-6c a litre more anyway, but I couldn't justify it when I found it at 164.9 - 53l x 15c = $7.90
