the 1.9 never came with a DPF, which is good! Less problems.

indeed. Search IS your friend, plenty of info on here, quite a few of us have modded them!

In your service Manuel, there should be a sticker with a whole heap of random letters etc on it. What does it say next to engine / trans?

If it says BKD then it's the 2.0l 16v.

I think only the Pacific models were the 2.0L

edit. mm hang on this isn't true. I'm looking at some on Carsales now and there are Comfortlines that are 2.0L and also 1.9L.
The 2.0L ones have a badge that says so and the 1.9L just say "TDI"

Comfort lines came in 1.9, Sportline and up had the option, but most are 2.0. The biggest killer for the 1.9 seems to be intake pipe restriction, EGR restriction, small side mount intercooler from the top of my head, but the 1.9 polo TDI guys will know way more than me.

Work on the same old hot rod principles, air in, exhaust out, cool the intake air, clean out the sludge from the blow by, run some fuel doctor through it, get a tune, even a basic overseas or local handheld tune will make considerable difference, the Viezu one on my TDI is astounding, but as I flog those now it sounds biased.

WEDEL.1 reflashed his 1.9 PD TDi MkV Golf with Oettinger and says it transformed his car so that it performs almost identically to the 103kW 2.0 PD version. The big trailer he towed across SA and WA last year certainly would have tested the engine.

But as others have said, this engine was also used in the 9N3 Polo and the same tuning applied to these would also work well with your Golf

My 1.9 PD TDi runs a Viezu remap (1 have three + stock, actually) and it's great. Others have had good results with CustomCode, DNA Tuning and Giac so I would decide on which dealer can locally support you best as well as on pricing.

The 1.9TDI is/was available in just about every VAG model sold and is the most prolific VAG engine to date, if you bunch the VE TDI's and PD ones in together.

Its been sold in variants from 66kW to 135kW, with the only real changes being the turbocharging, intercooling and software.

Its about the most time tested engine you can buy, apart from a beetle engine.

anyway, Greg is right that the main thing is to make sure it doesnt get clogged up by the EGR circuit. Thats about all really.

just have a search/read through on this forum about EGR.

Have you checked out the "new to the diesel forum" sticky?

All trendlines are 1.9, comfortline were avilable in 1.9 or 2.0, sportline were 2.0 only.

Jazd is correct, cars with the 2.0 engine have the '2.0 tdi' badge, the 1.9 powered cars just have the 'tdi' badge.

I only know this as it was bloody confusing for me when I was shopping for one!
