I took my car into an exhaust place today and got the pancake cut out of the back of the MKV! Felt like it was breathing a bit better and also had a *slight* change in note (no idea why VW insists on putting it on...).
Total cost $85
I drove it for about 10 mins and wasn't happy with the noise (no different!), so I took it back and got the centre resonator cut out... So now I have a cat and nothing but straight pipe!
Cost an extra $50 to get that done
Now it sounds much better! It's a bit noisier below 2000rpm and you can hear the exhaust flowing above 3500rpm... Outside it must sound a lot louder, but inside it's OK (I wouldn't say 'quiet' and I also wouldn't say 'loud'). You do get a pigeon-sex type noise when you've backed off quickly, but other than that, you can hear the turbo spool easier too
Car picks up a lot better too, turbo seems to kick in about 1600rpm rather than 1800rpm like it used to... Not sure if it's faster 0-100, but response is definitely better.
Do it!
There's a few clips on youtube of diesels with straight through exhausts and they aren't loud either...
