  • Mk 1 GLD idling problems

    Hi All

I went for a drive tonight in the GLD and it started ok but as soon as I got out of the driveway it seemed to starve of fuel after revving to pull away.

I got it started again however further down the road it stopped again, It started for a third time after cranking but then died again.

Does the GLD have a mechanical or electric fuel pump? Or what else could it be?

I undid the fuel filter filled it with fuel and managed to get it home. It started again but then died again

    Any ideas?

I noticed that it seems to take a long time cranking to get it going over the last few weeks maybe the fuel pump?

    Thanks

    Hello,

it could be any number of other things but check for air leaks in the fuel hoses to the injector pump (it helps to have a clear section between the filter and the injector pump). It could also be a blocked fuel filter fuel filter. I experienced something similar recently with my GLD. In my case it wasnt the filter or air leaks. I couldnt prime the pump and it seemed as though there was a blockage in the fuel line. I removed the hoses from each end (blocking the line from the tank) and blew backwards through the line, dislodging some crud in the process. This fixed it.

hiho's got all the big ones right there - only other one is that if the car has sat for a long time (say, 6 months to a year) the lift pump in the injector pump can sieze if there is some water in the fuel or some such contamination.
I'f you've been driving if regularly I'd sight blocked fuel filter as the first thing from your description.

I replaced the fuel filter about 6 weeks ago as a preventative maintenance thing, every time I open the fuel filter it has air in it so it takes a long time to crank and start the car, about 15 secs. Car is only started once per week etc. Is it normal for the fuel filter to have air in the top part of the filter? I thought no but I am not sure. I used some fuel doctor over the last 6 months maybe it has dislodged some crap in the fuel tank and blocking the fuel line a bit?

Will use my compressor over the weekend and blow back through the fuel line, hopefully this will fix it so there is no air in the fuel filter too...

          Thanks for your feedback

I flushed the fuel line backwards today with a compressor, a bit of stuff came out the other end. I saw some fuel come out to the rear of the fuel filter, between the fuel filter and fuel line leading to the fuel tank. The connector is not a screw up type but a squeeze together one.

Hopefully this will be ok now, will take it for a drive soon and see how it goes. Changed the fuel line to a clear one between the fuel filter and injector pump. At least I can see the air bubbles now as the fuel line was black before.

Took the car for a drive however same problem as before.

I can see that air is getting into the line now, maybe the 15cm of black fuel line that goes between the fuel filer and the metal fuel line that comes up from the fuel tank at the rear. Will replace this morning and see how that goes.

I'm not sure how to remove the fuel line from the fuel filter though as it is not a screw up clamp type but one that is clamped or squeezed together

            Any ideas?

Just tried to remove the hose connector on the side of the fuel filter which is clamped on and broke the brass fitting where it connects to the top of the fuel filter

Off to Repco to see if they have another brass fitting to attach to the side of the fuel filter housing....

Went to Repco, Supercheap and Autobahn to see if I could get a replacement brass fitting. None of them had anything. Repco suggested Pirtek around the corner, so I went for a drive and guess what they were open on a Sunday.

I had to get a replacement banjo fitting (brass bit) and some hose. Upside is that it is all back together and working again. Downside is that I have a clamp fitting on the banjo fitting again. Air was leaking through the fuel pipe between the metal fuel line from the rear and fuel filter. I guess a 30 year old pipe does not last forever....

When I inspected the old pipe it smelt of fuel so I guess I disturbed it when I replaced the fuel filter a while ago as I had to remove the mount on the strut pillar and it broke down after 33 years.

            Happy motoring again
