  • Exhaust grumble?

Hey guys, a really newbie question, but, is it possible to get a nice grumble from the exhaust on a tdi with dpf?
Looking for something basic, not necessarily loud, and still legal :S (insurance wise too).

I know it seems like a stupidly safe question, but I am interested

    cheers

Removal of the rear pancake muffler helps a little, but the rear axle resonator is supposedly the main restriction after the DPF. Replace that with a decent straight through resonator and ditch the final big rear muff entirely and it will be a bit better, but diesels hardly ever sound sexy in 4 cylinder form, and the DPF is the best muffler you can get outside the turbo.

yeah, just trying to make it plain. the best noise you could get would be straight pipe, and very short, with no dpf. even then it wouldn't be as loud as a civic with a fart can exhaust. trying to make a big exhaust noise with a diesel that has a small turbo is like shovelling concrete with a garden fork.

haha well, i did say a subtle grumble, im not looking for that horrible loud noise the idiots put on their lancers, hell i dont want it to be loud, just a nice low gear grrrrrr

I guess subtle can be pretty subjective.

I thought my old mk3 had a nice exhaust note...

full noise on the dyno but from infront....
VW Golf 3 AAZ TurboDiesel (not TDI) - YouTube

better one of the noise just after I put in the T3 turbo

I had 2.5" exhaust from the turbo back, with no cat, a short "hotdog" resonator about halfway and a straight through short rear muffler. even so, it was pretty darned quiet.

With the stock turbo it made a lot less noise with the same exhaust system. actually, that exhaust system with the stock turbo made no more noise than the stock exhaust, which was 2" - Cat, 1.75" the rest of the way with 2 mufflers.

                      I hope that helps.

Wow that actually sounds GOOD for a diesel!

I can only hope mine gets that sort of noise...

So im going to bump this back up, as I am once again interested in playing around with this, are there any new discoveries?
I was going to do a muffler delete, but apparently that is useless for any sound, I just want some sound, all I can hear is engine noise haha.

Getting a miltek catback.. that wont do anything without a downpipe? which involves bypassing DPF, which involves retuning for the dpf delete, which in turn, is illegal to have no dpf. haha

I had a milltek cat-back exhaust on old Fabia VRS PD130 which was tuned - it didn't have a down-pipe suprisingly but EGR delete, custom code tune with a Forge FMIC and LWFW + everything else - it drove really well. Anyways - that had a really nice exhaust tone to it, which you could hear over the engine. I've got some old videos floating around on an old hard drive - I can try and find them to put them up if you want. I had a SEAT Leon FR with the CR 125kw Diesel engine - that sounded pretty nice too and that was stock.
