  • 2.5, 5 cylinder inline TD

Not being an expert in VW Diesels I'm a little confused re the engine range.

I'm looking at the 2.5, inline, 5 cylinder diesel, as a replacement for a D24T (intercooled) 2.4, inline, 6 cylinder diesel, which I don't think was used in any vehicle imported into Australia.
To start with, I understand the 2.5 engine has different crankcase options dependant on whether it is fitted to a front or rear wheel drive?....Is this correct?
Besides the Crafter is the rear wheel drive version fitted to any other vehicles in Australia?

Initially I had thought the 2.5 option was best given that it appears to be more "readily used" motor in Australia, than the D24T, but now I'm thinking they are both rare beasts here ..... Yes/No?

Any information on the above motor/s would be appreciated.....Thanks!

    Hi Peter,

There are quite a lot of 5 cylinder VW diesels to choose from.

Transporters have had 5 cylinder vw diesel engine options for a long time, since the early 90's, and they roughly encompass:

    > 2.4l indirect injection, non-turbo
    > 2.5l, direct injection, turbo, from about 60kw to 125kw depending on the vintage.

The 2.4 5 cylinder engine is VERY similar to the D24 - same injection system etc, but the cylinder capacity is larger. The 2.4 5cyl is the 5cyl variant of the popular 4cylinder 1.9L diesel, whereas the D24 is the 6 cylinder version of the popular 1.6l 4 cylinder engine.

There is a good list of the various diesel engines fitted to transporters on wikipedia - Volkswagen Transporter (T4) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Australian delivered T4's had nearly all of the diesel engines listed there, with notable exception being the 1.9l TD, 4 cyl.

hope that helps - BTW - what do you have a D24 in? I always thought a D24T would be a fantastic engine..... I'd put one in an e30bmw and everyone would probably hate it.

      G'Day gldgti

      Thanks for the reply.
I'm passionate about Pinzgauers (and Haflingers) made by the Austrian company, Steyr Puch (now Magna Steyr).
Steyr Puch have had a long association with VW from the Syncro to the Country Golf.

Early model Pinzgauers (I own a 4X4 and a 6X6) had a Steyr Puch designed air-cooled inline (with individual cylinders and cylinder heads) 4 cylinder petrol motor, but later vehicles had the 6 cylinder 2,4 D24T (intercooled) then later again the 2.5, 5 cylinder unit.
Other items such as the disk brake calipers are also VW (Girling/VW).

Originally I had intended to rebuild a 718 (6X6 TD Pinzgauer) with the 5 cylinder unit as I understand the D24T was never imported into Australia (besides being fitted to the LT vans it was also fitted to some Volvo cars) so I thought it would be easier to get parts and components locally.

My understanding is that the 5 cylinder, 2,5 is built specifically as a FWD (front wheel drive) or RWD (rear wheel drive) motor and that secondhand RWD units such as fitted to the Crafter are near impossible to find secondhand in Australia.

Given the above I'm still unsure which motor to fit

cool - engineered a bit like smaller versions of Tatra trucks....

the crafter is quite new and like you say, you wont find an engine really available - nor would you really want it - to run a new generation TDI you would need to bring over the ECU and wiring aswell.

Any engine from the T4 vans (as in the wiki page i linked you to) would be far easier to get working in another vehicle, mainly because they still use a bosch VE style injector pump, just like your D24T. They are electronically controlled, but if you are clever you can make a fully mechanical pump to run the TDI injection system fitted to the 2002 and older vehicles without much trouble, really.

parts for the d24T are available overseas, and many major parts are very available and cheap because they are the same in the vw 1.6 TD engine, which is very popular, for example, in the US.

As to the differences between engines for rwd and fwd - you'll find that the differences are external to the engine - mounts, manifolds and oil sump, for example. The engine itself will be the same.

Don't forget lots of the VAG cars all use common VW engines, and virtually identical engines crop up in BMW and Merc as well, so you could extend your search across all the German commercials in my opinion, but yeah, much more common in Europe than here.

Thanks gldgti that clears up a lot!
I'm erring on the side of fitting the earlier standard D24T as it will fit directly into the drivetrain I'm using, whereas I would have to order or custom make a lot of componentry to fit the later 5 cylinder.

....Ohh and yes the Pinzgauer (and Haflinger) and the Tatra have a lot in common. They were designed by the Austrian engineer Ledwinka who worked for both companies.

BTW....A mate of mine owned a 1.6 TD Golf years ago so I might have to talk to him re parts etc.

Rolf, the D24T was used in the VW LT in Europe and some Volvo cars so hopefully spares are readily available in Europe.

Thanks again guys for the info!

something that might help you - VagCat boards

sign up and you can view the whole vag parts catalogue. that will help you find exactly what parts from what engines are interchangeable. it also gives you a good indication of what engines are available from various models.

Hi Pete, old thread so not sure if you are still after a Crafter engine, there is one on E-bay at the moment. 2008 model in Sydney, just search "vw crafter" should bring it up.

                  cheers Peter

Pete. As above, I just spotted the Crafter engine on ebay to! Re the 2.4 6 cyl engine you talk about, this was fitted to the LT 28 and LT30 (old shape) vans in europe, and also Volvo 740 and 760 cars (engine was uprighted in this application), the reason I know this.. I fitted one of these into a Land Rover and it sounded awesome! Check out the youtube vid 'Volvo 740 6 months later' and you will see what I mean. I'm after another one of these engines if you know of any! Simon.
