  • MK6 Tdi Exhaust mods - anyone done it ?

I am considering removing the rear or even both mufflers on my MK6 wagon.

I have searched here and found a few posts about doing this on MK5's but not MK6's.

The only reason I'm considering this is in an effort to remove the bad vibe/resonance this car has 1200 - 1600 rpm. This is the rpm range the DSG wants to be in almost all the time. VW insists that this is "how they all are".

The plan was to just remove sections starting at the back to see if it helped the resonance or more importantly changes the frequency that it occurs. This seems to not be possible as the whole rear suspension looks as if it needs to be removed to get the exh sytem out as there are no joins. I am prepared to cut and flange the stock system if required, but was hoping someone may have already tryed modifications on the Mk6 so I'd have an idea what to expect as far as increased noise goes.

    Cheers

I know i don't have a mk6. But I have a 9n3 Polo TDI with no mufflers what so ever. I can honestly say the noise levels have ever bothered me. For me at least they didn't increase that much over stock.

I also cut and flanged mine. best move, makes the whole thing reversable if you dont like it!

    Happy cutting mate

The MK5 and MK6 TDI exhausts are quite similar in the muffler / cat back department. They do run very different DPF's now though, and you have a precat, the DPF, and a post cat all in separate sections of the front pipe. Any one of these "may" cause a resonance problem, but are quite essential to emission control.

At the rear axle is the factory resonator, and this is one I would be careful about removing if you have resonance issues. The rear muffler is exactly that, and removal of this on a MKV TDI makes only the most minor difference.

In your shoes I would be far more inclined to try and wrap seperate parts of the exhaust system with some heat proof wrap - such as header wrap - as removing the very parts meant to quieten it down would most likely make it worse. Hey I'm ALL for mods, but perhaps considering wrapping each bit in sequence, and seeing if this drops the noise would allow you to pinpoint the problem part, then look into aftermarket solutions for it.

Given you have a wagon, I'd agree you are right thinking it is coming from the rear of the exhaust as the wagon is only amplifying the effect, and I continue to be amazed at just how quiet the new MK6 TDI's are compared to the very tractor like MKV!!

I still have our Mk5 and even though its got a fair bit of "diesel noise", I'd happily trade that for the vibes in the MK6.

Initially I wanted to remove the whole lot from just under the front seat back but I would have to cut the pipe and put some flanges in to do this. I think the Golf hatch has a fairly different exhaust than the wagon. Certainly the MK5 hatch is different. The wagon does not have the big suitcase type muffler at the rear. Removal of sections may increase or change the harmonic - but this would at least tell me I'm looking in the right area.

Here are some pics of the US Borla system for the wagon (jetta sportwagen for the US) alongside the stock system.

ahh yeah sorry forgot it's a wagon had has that different rear muffler. The resonator at about the axle looks similar even in bends.
