Have you had it hooked up to VCDS? I'm pretty sure you can see the % open closed on the turbo vanes. That would tell you if they are sticking or not.

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

i've been reading this thread as it seems pretty similar to whats affecting our oilers - http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f136...t-33037-3.htmlMY02 Bora V6 4Mo|Matte Black plastidip|VTDA|R32 Exhaust|R32 dampers and springs|TT pedals|R32 steering wheel|17" 8L S3 rims|R32 sways|Blue Haldex|EBC reds

Just got back from taking my car for a big flex through the hills and I must say it definitely has helped a bit. Can't say that is boosting at 100% efficiency but noticeably better.
I have also noticed that the problem occurred on a day that was quite cold. Today's overnight temperature is not as cold and with me getting the turbo quite hot this may have helped the situation. But who's to say that it won't be back again tomorrow.
When it goes back to VW for boost pressure test I will ask them if they can in fact check the % of vane opening/closing. This should be quite interesting.
Try going for a very spirited drive and see if it clears out the lungs a little.

before the start of the long weekend, I got a call from VW and they had been "trying all day" to replicate my error code and couldn't get it to fault. Thats believable, because some days it would go fine and some other days it would trip two or three times easily. I said they should go up a certain route that I found would always trip the error.
Looks like a bit of wait-and-see to find out what the outcome will be - new turbo or just a spray of wd40 into the vanes?MY02 Bora V6 4Mo|Matte Black plastidip|VTDA|R32 Exhaust|R32 dampers and springs|TT pedals|R32 steering wheel|17" 8L S3 rims|R32 sways|Blue Haldex|EBC reds

well, my update is no news
They couldn't get the car to fault again, and so as its now only about 2 weeks or less from end of 3yr warranty i've told them they need to keep the car until they can get it to fault and therefore fix it.MY02 Bora V6 4Mo|Matte Black plastidip|VTDA|R32 Exhaust|R32 dampers and springs|TT pedals|R32 steering wheel|17" 8L S3 rims|R32 sways|Blue Haldex|EBC reds

The vw service dudes got her to throw the overboost fault code, so now its a case of confirming what VW want (they send the codes and the download off to VWA to get advice, apparently) but one of the service guys said he usually gets the order to throw a new turbo in there so yay for that. I just want the thing back on the road dammit.MY02 Bora V6 4Mo|Matte Black plastidip|VTDA|R32 Exhaust|R32 dampers and springs|TT pedals|R32 steering wheel|17" 8L S3 rims|R32 sways|Blue Haldex|EBC reds

...and that would indicate sticking vanes, either physically, or the vane solenoid mechanism is sticking. Can't see why it wouldn't affect all the MKV TDI's, as they all have the same centre to the 1749 turbo, with different impellers and exhaust turbines depending on application.
I have a wild idea. Hook a small line of deionised water pre turbo, so that it is slowly drawn into the engine, much like water meth injection. This water steam cleans the engine, certainly the piston and valves come out sparkling clean after running water meth, and having run water myself for a few weeks now, it sure makes for a bit more mid range too. You would need to make sure the feed is only small, as too much water would be dangerous for the engine, but if it is just being drawn in by engine ( turbo ) vacuum, it should be regulated. May steam clean the exhaust turbine, and thus the VNT vanes.
Obvioulsy a wild idea, and if you have warranty, use that instead!!!2014 Skoda Yeti TDI Outdoor 4x4 | Audi Q3 CFGC repower | Darkside tune and Race Cams | Darkside dump pDPF | Wagner Comp IC | Snow Water Meth | Bilstein B6 H&R springs | Rays Homura 2x7 18 x 8" 255 Potenza Sports | Golf R subframe | Superpro sways and bushings | 034 engine mounts | MK6 GTI brakes |

If you ever ran a car with a bad head gasket for any length of time, that cleans the piston and head really well. I have read of the spams using a trigger bottle of water up the intake to carry out a decoke too.

This all sounds really good but for us not so technically minded people setting this up sounds like a nightmare. Heck i'm too much of a chicken to take apart my
EGR and intake just in case I f*#k something up. Anyone wanting to lend a hand in this department i'm willing to set aside some $$ to do so.

VW service are still sitting on their hands "waiting on how to proceed from vwa" and now they want to see a invoice from a mechanic for a non-gen service to ensure the right oils were used. Fair enough, and I am sure he has but surely the turbo gunking up is a known problem at about 100K kms regardless of oils used.
I seem to remember many comments about oils and servicing and stuff, and that you'd have to have major engine issues from the oils rather than something relatively minor.MY02 Bora V6 4Mo|Matte Black plastidip|VTDA|R32 Exhaust|R32 dampers and springs|TT pedals|R32 steering wheel|17" 8L S3 rims|R32 sways|Blue Haldex|EBC reds

Well, long story short the turbo has been replaced under warranty and she drives a treat. Do i need to drive differently with the new snail?MY02 Bora V6 4Mo|Matte Black plastidip|VTDA|R32 Exhaust|R32 dampers and springs|TT pedals|R32 steering wheel|17" 8L S3 rims|R32 sways|Blue Haldex|EBC reds
