Just print it out and leave it with your dealer. Make them aware that you're researching the problem.

Sounds like yours has both Low-speed droning and Middle-speed droning which is worse than our Passat wagon. I haven't found any Middle-speed droning with ours as the cabin is really quiet within the speed range all the way up to 110 kph except the low RPM range of 1200.

It is not speed dependant, it's rpm dependant irrespective of load.
1200 - 1400 prm is the worst of it, but its there up to about 1700 rpm.
100 klm/hr cruising is fine - but that is only a small percentage of our driving.

Not sure if you good folk got anywhere with this issue since the thread has died in recent months? For what its worth my Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI had identical sounding symptoms. Turned out to be the air box. Ironically found by a VW dealer - Skoda had no clues. They insulated it and hey presto - silent (for a PD TDI that is ). Could be worth considering. I know that resonance bugged the living daylights out of me.

That's good you got it resolved.
Maybe it would be worth while to mention the name of the dealer, for others to know.

My TDi passat MY12 has this issue I firstly thought it was just coz the car was sealed so well. However the feeling is like going up high altitude your ears feels like its blocked. I need to look into this more.
Anyone still experience this droning issue? Or had had it resolved by VW

I think the problems seems like its very likely linked to how the intake piping is mounted in the engine bay (could be similar for the 118tsi and tdi models, I havent looked but is not unlikely).

Anyway, probably all thats needed is some extra support somewhere. You have to think about what kind of equipment is required to make the noise - most likely a vibrating tube. The fix might be as simple and stupid as removing the inlet piping and then re-assembling it again (all the screws holding the various sections to the bodywork have some slight adjustment in them, allowing it vibrate easily or not, depending on how it goes together.)

I have the same issue as described and i had taken my Jetta TDI 2.0l 103kw to Blacktown VW and they did a 60.000kms service and i mentioned the problem, their explanation for the problem was to upgrade the firmware to the DSG but after i picked it up problem still there,

so i am going to go back and tell them to look into the AIR box as i found out the problem is even in neutral.....ill keep this post updated to help others.

                      thanks

After having a close look under the bonnet i found out that the noise came from a piece of plastic cover which is at the very front and very top where the air intake is, so its like a lid/cover and it has 3 clips and one clip was very hard to clip down but once it was secure no more noise at any range (very noticeable before at the mentioned rev ranges above)

i am not sure if everyone here is having the same issues but i had the same problem and i have solved it but re clipping the plastic down firmly,

hope this helps someone out there, i kinda laughed at how simple it was and how annoying the noise was.....

                        cheers
