Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

  • Mk1 1.5 GLD starting issues

As the title says I'm having some hiccups when starting the golf, now it's always started but, mostly when cold, there seems to be a few seconds pause from when I turn the key to start to the starter motor kicking. Today there was nothing at all, then when I went to see if I could notice anything out of the ordinary a few hours later bam it kicked over. This is after glowing the plugs. The battery is fine
Driving the coal. Low and rattly.

i would bet its just your ignition switch on the way out. you can still get new ones I think, or try pulling it apart and fixing it.

to rule out the starter, try a jump lead to the solenoid (turn key on, allow to glow, get out of car, go around and short using a bit of wire from the battery +ve terminal to the solenoid terminal)

or, vise versa, take the wire off the solenoid and connect a voltmeter, and have someone turn the ignition switch to start while you look for voltage at the wire.
