Problem solved. I just went out an bought a new 585CCA battery (the one that's specified for the diesel (N66 or something).
It fits nicely in the battery tray, and cranks the petrol over rather nicely, so it will be enough for the diesel.
Yep, that's the correct one.
Make sure that you upgrade the lead to the starter and the earths.
I just had to buy a replacement for my Mk3 TDI... I had not driven it in 4 weeks and the batteried was dead - could not jump etc and it was 5 1/2 years old.
Get your batteries from a Discount Tyre center... you will save - trust me!
I got a Exide 600CCA last week for $150 (DIN66 15 plate resessed terminals). (I have also had to buy last year larger batteries for the LR Defender TDI and Tractor - N77 @ ~$110 )
He said to me that Exide are one of the few manufactueres that stamp the min CCA's and usually they have a lot more. He tested it and it read 680 CCA's.
Now with regards to running 2 batteries in a Mk1... forget it! you just added 20-25kg to the car for nothing!!!
Just get one battery.
