  • TDI CR engine cover

I posted this in the Mk 6 forum, but didn't learn anything — maybe I'll do better here?

Does anyone know how to remove the engine cover on a TDI 103?

Was looking at how I could fit a Provent on the Mk 6 and no way can I pull the cover off — I'm not physically strong enough!

I can bend it out of shape, but no way will it come loose.

I can't see anything accessible holding it down so it must just clip on, but it feels as solid as if bolted to the motor.

I'm reluctant to apply mechanical force — my fear is that it will break something before it will come loose (though 85, I'm not all that weak — can still lift >70Kg if I have to.)

It is most likely bolted down at one or more ends.

Have a look for some torque screws near the back, a number of golfs also come straight mkIV 1.6 petrols just come straight off.

I have to say kudo's to you mate for really getting into it at your age, I can only hope I'm still as motivated as you when I get older

Someone did post a write up on the mk5 on the removal of the cover a few years back.
From memory a few on this forum had used force and broken the hold down
bracket which has a bolt to release it.
Seems its already been answered from your other post.

Yes, the reply from the other post got me out of it — all it required was more pudden'. The clue is to jerk hard on one corner at a time.

FYI, this one is retained on four more-or-less identical ball snaps and all you need is sufficient upward pressure. Once removed and replaced it comes off easier.

Many thanks to all who replied.

I always put rubber grease on these holding balls before I put cover back on. It needs less force to remove next time.
