  • Oil !!!!!

The oil consumption on my new tdi_eg is a bit stunning.

Checked the oil for the first time yesterday.. at 759km it is already below the add mark... yikes.

Put half the supplied bottle in until I get some more .. but it really needed the whole litre.

Now I know why they supply oil... but at this rate I need to buy it in 20 l drums

This is almost 2 stroke territory .. about 1 :100..

I certainly haven't been babying it ....or thrashing it either.

Just love the car but I'm not telling any of my Tonka loving friends about this dirty little secret ..

    Cheers

I'd be talking to the dealer sooner rather than later. They will likely put you on their "oil consumption" watch where the oil level is carefully monitored, and they record all top-ups amounts accurately. Some VW engines use oil, some don't, but the odd one uses altogether too much.

Just out of curiosity, how have you been driving it so far (length of time idling, usage of cruise control, any special running-in regime) ?

At BEST your oiler will take several thousand kms to run in. I've heard people mention 10 - 40 k for a full run in!

Mine used a bit of oil in the first few thousand, but there's been stuff all since. Don't baby it, use the boost!

My oil warning light came on a few weeks ago just as I was driving out the drive at 2130 to head to work! WTF! Anyway put in back in the garage and took the Jag instead.

Called the dealer service guys and they said didn't you get told when you picked it up it would use a lot of oil in the first year. Um no I didn't get told that.

Anyway they told me what oil to get so I just topped it up next day. No oil was included with my Golf. I'm now checking it every few weeks

Similar to tgh, I called in at the local dealer when the light came on they filled and I was on my way. They did this twice in the 1st 15k all at no charge and then when I had the 15k service they (Penrith VW) gave me a litre for topping up which was only needed in the 30 to 45k service interval.

I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Just take Greg's advice and give it hell straight away (low Kms, not freezing cold..). You need the boost to help the rings seal and intern, help them bed in. Driving it conservatively is actually worse for it.

                      dont glaze the bores

get into it within reason, diesels like a 60% workload or better, if you don't you could glaze the bores.

A few weeks ago when the warning light came on I went to supplying dealer in Townsville. The mechanic gave me a litre in my (dry) water bottle. No charge! For Townsville (rip-off city) this was incredible.

When my Mk V was due the 15K oil change I was asked $380. For < 5L oil, filter and, presumably, an hour's work. Was this to repay them for free oil top-ups?

Castrol wanted nearly $380 for a 20L drum of VW 507 so I looked around and found 20L Mobil VW 507 (IE. Mobil 1 ESP 5W30) for $239. Nobody seems to do 5L.

I'm following the illustrated instructions at www.myturbodiesel.com

I just wrenched off the engine cover and took out the filter. It's a Purflux L267A with VW and Audi logos. "Made in France" I could not find a large O ring as described though. I wonder if they are no longer used - anybody know?

Also, anybody know where to source this filter - or equivalent?

I found that the dealer is cheapest, some aftermarket oil filters aren't made the same way as original Purflux (nice filter).

My 15K service cost $528 and only $76.73 was for the oil.
Most of it was labourI was amazed at how all the little (except the labour) things add up.

BTW my TDI didn't come with any oil and, like a girl, I never think to check the level

My dealer (Essendon Volkswagen) offer a top up service. You just bring the car in and they check the oil and windscreen washer levels.

So far so good, I haven't had any dramas. Oil use has been negligible. I'm going to take it back again at 22500km.
