Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • EGR Blanking Plate

Anyone tried it? I tried it today, van ran very smooth with no flat spots and absolutely no smoke but got flashing glow plug lights and then exhaust gas warning light. Van was still driving well. I then removed the plate and the warning lights went off. Van still driving great. I installed the plate on the exhaust manifold side because it was easier to get to the bolts and since there is no visible sensor on the EGR valve I thought it wouldn't matter if you installed it on the exhaust or intake side.....any thoughts, experience?

I would unblock it. It will not work. It can only be reduced with the software changes; not the VCDS (Vag-com) job.

What year is your van? You mention exhaust light (DPF), so I assume it is 2006-on.
Make sure you don't end up with damaged DPF box, if your van is under the warranty, the warranty could be voided, if the dealer would find out that you tempered with the vehicle emissions system.

yeah thanks T, I did take it off straight away after the lights came on and did some in depth research on it that night. Found out that in the modern engines, the egr valve only opens during idle and light load and actually shuts when the power is needed. was a good learning experience. I'll tell you a really bizzare thing though, the van was running like brand new for about a day after I had removed it. Not one puff of smoke at all even when i pushed it. And so responsive.
