  • Diesal Oil- Penzoil V Mobile

    Peoples,

After having some difficulty finding 5v 30 oil in the provinces, i can order Penrite 5l ($80) or Mobile 1 20l ($230) in preference to the Caltex from the dealer at $123 for 5 litres!.Ive "poured "through the Oils section but nonetheless my conundrum remains-Which of the 2 Diesal oils is "better" in peoples opinion and in terms of warranty. At moment just looking for a top up oil, but thanks to the good info on here i may be doing servicing( oil changes) myself after Service 1. Subjective opinions welcome as i want to avoid chopping and changing form 1 for top up and then one for servicing so i am leaning towards Mobil ? I drive an 08 TD GT

Thanks in advance for any tips

The mobil is a far better oil, is a vw 505, and 507 I believe... also is used by most professional VW specialists...

That's not to say the penrite isn't a bad oil, but Mobil1 is the way to go, I do believe they sell them them in 5L also but it's nearly impossible to find.

I stock on Mobil1 ESP for my rides (excluding T5 Transporter), Penrite brand doesn't look right IMO (for any positive comment about Penrite oils there is equally or more negative one on the internet).
Shell has VW504.00/507.00 oil - see Nissan dealers (around $80 for 5L)
If you order 20L of oil I'm sure it should last 2 years or more if properly stored.

talking to people in real life, i've never heard a bad word about penrite... i started using it years ago on the advice of a mechanic that i had some respect for, but havent ever had a bad experience with it myself in 3 vehicles (and dad runs it in 3 aswell).

only having had good experience with it, and that a specialist porsche mechanic who works next door to me uses it for all of his customers vehicles, i thought it oughta be good enough for me.

        just my sujective opinion...

i thought it was pretty good value too - supercheap sells the fully synthetic diesel stuff in 10L bottles.

Yeah you're right the Penrite oils are good value, no doubts about it.
What I'm missing is the important information from the data sheets like: HTHS index, Noack Volatility Number and TBN, so one could compare it to other brands products.
So far the only oil suitable from their range for late model VW is HPR Diesel Enviro+5W30 approved for VW504.00/507.00 use.

I wonder if we should email them and ask? Might be worth a try - If I ran a specialist automotive oils company, i'd want to know what the people out there 'wanted to know'.

They have some oils approved too, check their website. You can get them from MotorTraders.

Shell Helix Ultra Extra is 504.00/507.00 approved. Supercheap now stock it and I believe some Autobarn/Repco stores also do.

OK - now for a question that is highly relevant to those of us afflicted with a DPF:

Does anyone know a website or published information that gives the ash content of commercially available engine oils?

Whilst an oil may be 507.00 compliant - I expect some oils may have a higher ash content than others.
Carer for my partner's Eos 2.0 TDI DSG MY09 Candy White/Cornsilk Beige leather trim.

For that you have to look at the oil data sheets and you find them on oil manufacturer's websites.

But, I would only use 507.00 oil that is approved by VW (not the one that meets or exceeds). The difference in ash content between approved oils will be negligible and with in the VW specs, that guaranties long engine and DPF life.

Excessive wearing of the engine components between approved and meet only oils is what I would be worried about. I currently browsing the forums similar to our in Czech republic where there is much more long term experience with VW cars and their maintenance and it only confirms what I'm saying about oils for VW diesel engines especially PD (unit injector). Over there they have one advantage that VW cars parts are there like Holden and Ford in here - parts are very cheap and many more workshops than in here.

Of course only a fool would use a non 507.00 compliant oil in the current spec TDI + DPF.

I am old enough to have seen Murphy's Law in its various forms in action many times, I also believe prevention is better than cure.

Our Eos is a long-term investment and will be with us for our lifetime so it is worhwhile for us to extend the life of the DPF as long as possible. The use of a 507.00 compliant oil with the lowest ash content will help us achieve this.

You probably know as well that how do you drive and what brand of diesel fuel you use will also affect the life of the DPF as well.
