  • 50 Million VE Pumps

I am reading a book called 'Troubleshooting & repairing Diesel Engines' by Paul Dempsey. He says that nearly 50 million VE pumps have been produced since introduction in 1975. I think that's an amazing no. produced. Does anyone know if Bosch developed this pump for the golf or did VW use it because it was available.

i cant answer about whether the pump was developed for the golf with any real certainty, but i say no, it wasnt - mainly because:

1: the golf also came out with a CAV pump
2: the smaller polo diesel came out with a Lucas pump
3: the original engine design had its underpinnings in a Mercedes design.
4: i'm sure that once sales got off the ground in about 1977-78, Bosche knew that they would be in for a good, long ride. subsequently the CAV pump on golfs dissappeared.

and finally 5: the VE pump came out on fords, pugs, cummins, tractors, GM's, toyota's, to name but a few

They were also used in marine applications where the "fuel shutoff valve must be energized to close. This permits the engine to continue to run should the vessel lose electrical power"
It's interesting that the Bosch pump was introduced in '75 & yet VW went with the CAV unit. Maybe it was the cost of the Bosch or they couldn't supply them in sufficient numbers at the time.
