Gee that scares me, and i'm sorry someone had to be the guinea pig. I will now have to pay attention to this- although in Provinces difficult, i has previously just thought, " High traffic" servos were preferable, without worrying about brand.Ive had 3 tanks in the car from new,all from different servo's.Safeway(Caltex) and Liberty- assume these are not the preferred brands of choice then?

Buy BP, since it has the highest CN (cetane no.), buy from one servo if possible and keep the receipts.

That's what I try to do, that way if I have trouble it will be the servo paying for the fix, not me. Most of my trips are less than 900km return, so I can buy nearly all my fuel from my local BP.

I think the first poster has been very unlucky.

A few other posts have indicated another caution for buying diesel vehicles.

My old diesel ute I first purchased new in 1991 has never had an issue with
algae or any contaminates after almost 400000k's, and this ute has been
all over the country refueling at tiny little country servo's and never a problem.

From the pic it looks like waste oil has been added and this is something you
would get away with if used in a large semi but as our poster has found not
          in a modern diesel car.

So thinking because the servo sells diesel to lots of trucks is no guarantee the quality of diesel.

The algae issue usually only rears its ugly head if the vehicle or tank has been sitting around for months
with a half empty tank letting the bacteria develope.

Its a shame you could not get the sample and confront the servo.

Greg- thanks for the tip, is that BP STD Diesal or "Ultimate", which if higher grade is unlikely my local(Country) BP will have ?

Ultimate will eventually hit all BP's, it's still popping up at new servo's all the time in SE QLD, so I'd stick with one servo all the same. Keeping receipts is a clever move.

Never understood why people are so worried about saving 5c per litre on fuel. Who cares.
5c over the 55 liters is only $2.75

Just stick to using quality fuel, furthermore use the lowest sulphur content diesel you can get hold of. Here in Vic BP diesel is the only one thats 10ppm, all the others are 50ppm

Must admit mate I always chuckle at the huge lineups at the Woolies servo's, when the total savings is at best less than one overnight DVD. Plenty of other ways to cut costs me thinks!

I hadn't realised this was in WA.
I'd been under the impression that *all* petrol in WA (independent or otherwise) is from the same BP refinery in Kwinana. Is this not the case for diesel fuel?

I suppose BP don't have much control over what happens to their fuel once dropped into a station's tanks.
Being out in Kewdale, I'd imagine (as the OP did) that they would turn over a lot of diesel, given 80% of the traffic out there has 18 wheels. For those not in WA - Kewdale is near the airport, so has a few industrial parks around.

...and Greg, I'll only chime in with crap about the diesel GT when it isn't part of a rather disturbing revelation... hearing $5k made my jaw drop.
Glad to hear you've got some work-arounds.

You aint wrong. I worked at a Coles express for many years and it used to give me the poos.

No wonder I'm now a geologist...sand and rocks don't answer back.

                      Business did increase 50% though.

As an aside when I resigned I wrote an excellent resignation letter, praising the company etc. I told the staff to take the first letter of each sentence for a "hidden code" It was coles.

I also put a sign in the spill kit bin (used for mopping up fuel spills) saying this is not a bin ! The state manager found it about a month after i left. mwuhhaaaaa.

Likewise... Although what gets me laughing harder is when people frantically find something to up their total spend (from say $27) to $30 just so they can get their 4 cents off per litre! I see plenty of that crap given where I work.. I tell ya though, the implementation of the Everday Rewards card was a very smart move.

actually, even though the low sulfur content diesel is good for the environment, it has lower lubricity than normal diesel.....

Just the standard BP diesel, I suppose we'll get BP Ultimate in the ACT when country NSW gets it.

True (and this lower lubricity was indeed a problem for some injector pumps), but AFAIK the lower sulphur content (ie 10 ppm) of modern diesel fuels is supposed to cause less soot so there are distinct benefits too :

                              1 Our engine oil will be less contaminated, so less engine wear;
2 We should have less trouble with our EGR sytems; and also
3 Our ultra expensve DPFs will hopefully last a bit longer

Less sulphur does = less lube, but they add some sort of lubricant back into it (says BPs website)
