Golf TDI Muffler Removal

Hey i did a quick search and found similar questions to this, but no answers:

Has anyone removed their rear pancake/suitcase muffler on a mk5 TDI (golf/polo/jetta etc)? My mate owns a speed shop and i could do it for the price of a 6 pack.

My plan would be to remove the rear muffler, and bolt on a 'dump' pipe in its place. I would use flanges so if i take to VW i can bolt the standard muffler back on.

So, if anyone has done this:

a)any noticable increase in power?
b)any noticable increase in droning/noise?
c)pics?

josh, [golfman] did this on his polo TDI the other week.

The difference on the freeway is barely noticable, i'd say minimal, or no drone at all.

Under acceleration, there is a slight increase in noise, very subtle and easy to miss. very noticeable from teh back seat though.

From the outside it's noisier, hard to describe the noise, but it wasn't super loud or offensive.

If you get it done with a flange so you can pop the back box back on when the mood takes, esp for the price of a six pack, I say go for it!

It's been done by Larry, the dude with the awesome red GT TDI on here, and reported nothing as far as noise goes.

You'd be lucky to notice any powergain, but it would help future mods. Mine is on the hit list.

This is going to be about the same price as adding some chrome tips to the current pancake muffler, so in place I can go to a straight through with a fat truck style dumpey instead - may be the option I reckon.

I was driving alongside him the other day and had no idea he'd done this. Might do it to mine just for weight saving

Ok well i think i will still do it regardless of how much of a gain is to be had. It looks pretty heavy, and I'm sure it must free up the exhaust at least a bit. Maybe i should just go straight to a side-exit

i found an usa site for tdi www.tdiclub.com it have some posts about muffler removals do a search no mufflers or mufflercetomy as they call it? theres some with sound clips as well

Josh paid like 100 bucks, but that included some flanges and and new hangers and stuff. too much just to take something off imo

My turbo spools quicker but thats prob the only performance gain.

apart from that, I just drove 2000kms all round NSW and back to VIC and on long drives I couldnt hear the difference really.

I say do it. 100 wasnt a bad price at all, especially when flanges are exxy, and so is labour

What exactly did you do?

Take the muffler off?

Did it make it sound LESS like a truck!?

Fraid it would only make it sound more truckish. You don't buy a diesel for the soundtrack.....

Apparently Ultimate Diesel from BP is supposed to make it sounds softer... I filled up today and can't tell the difference

Marketing hyoe mate. I have run it from the day it came out and noticed zip. Will keep the fuel system cleaner though, which is a good thing. All those old diesels that belch black smoke usually have dirty injectors.

I am talking to a guy in Sydney in making a rear muff delete rear pipe. I reckon that once one has been made, they would be pretty cheap to have it remade for others. I'll let you know.
