  • 2.0 TDI - how much boost ?

    Hi All

As the title suggests I'm wondering how much boost these current 2.0 engines are running - does anyone know ?

From what I can gather the 2.0's run at 18 psi - quite a lot however that makes sense given the performance of the things even in standard trim.

18PSI are you seriuos!!!! that doesnt give you much room to play with, gotta wack on a bigger turbo and injectors for some gains in performance?

the turbos they use are so tiny i think garret t18 or something like that, they put out high boost though only only downfall is lag but after 3000rpm u feel it

18 psi is a lot for some engines, but not a vw diesel....

im actually surprised its that low...

anyway, the 1.9 is about the same. the big difference in power between the 1.9 and 2 l is due to the 2l being a rather different engine, next generation type thing... the 1.9 in an older engine which has been used through the mk4's etc aswell.

www.vwdiesel.net is the central hub of all vw diesel knowledge. a lot of guys run up to 30 psi.... i've seen figures of 38 for guys running 14sec 1/4's with mk1 1.6 turbo diesels.

After installing the boost gauge in the 2.0 TDI, I have the following to add to this discussion.

Normally under light acceleration I am at 10psi, under hard acceleration I have had it at 30psi - at the end of my gauges measurement, generally I find it is around 20-24psi in these conditions.

The boost pressure is all over the place because of the variable vein on the turbo so the pressure in the intercooler is quite dynamic.

                Hope that helps.

Mik - is your's chipped or anything? It seems to be very high!

What turbo is in the diesel?

                    I am stock currently.

The turbo is the factory fitted one, someone have the details?

                      not enough!!!

most (well made) turbo diesel engines are good for up to about 30psi on relatively stock set ups. With a few mods, stronger block etc; sky's the limit.

Acutally the sky is probably a little bit too much boost.

well, the sky (our atmosphere) gives us a slightly variable but usually consistent 14.7 psi above the vacuum of space, so the sky is really not the limit afterall...

mikinoz, thats great that you've answered the boost question for us.

my 1.9 IDI mk3 runs 12psi standard. this is enough to make it a real joy to drive, but its certainly inside the "infinite engine life " bracket. i would like to turn the boost up a bit on mine (running a k14 i think) but i think i'll wait until i have a bigger exhaust and an intercooler - the risk with running high boost is high engine temps, melting pistons etc. even with the stock 12psi on my 1.9, a full throttle full boost whack for about 15 seconds will increase the engine temp noticeably.

i suspect that the new tdi's with VNT turbo's are managed electronically to limit the boost/fuel if EGT's (exhaust gas temps) get high.

william, a small turbo typically reduces boost lag so that the engine is more driveable. large turbo's are laggy, not small ones. the disadvantage of a small turbo is at high rev's when the compressor efficiency becomes low and temperatures go up without really increasing the boost. hence turbo matching...

the VNT turbo is designed to get aorund this by allowing the turbo to assemble boost more efficiently at low and high rpm, hence having a broader range of efficient operation

                          Hey Mikinoz

What boost gauge are you running. I'm Looking at putting one in my TDI but its so hard to decide what gauge to go with and where to mount it.
