Will be interesting to see what sort of sales the diesels will bring for Subaru. They do have a nice sporty look about them though. Maybe if they sell really well VW might consider bringing the Golf GTD to OZ sooner rather than later

The thing to go for in the Forester is the longitudinal drive train system as is in Q5.

Subie flat four is a very very wide motor. Think of a BMW motorcycle.
Leaves little room around the sides like a normal engine, and a whole lot of top room. Guess the figured they'd use the space, and by keeping it close they run short pipes, giving quicker response, when it's cool anyhow!
How's that for a guess??

It is also a very very short motor, so there is a lot of room for FMI and it would be also cheaper to use air2air intercooler, don't you think?
If, manufacturer (Subaru - Fuji Heavy Industry) use more expensive solution (intercooler) they have the reason for it.
Subaru designed that diesel engine for long enough time and I'm sure they did it right.

So, you read the magazine and based on the information in it you’re saying that - the air2air FMI would be better and Subaru made a mistake by selecting top mounted intercooler. You even didn’t road test that car yet.
Remember when you read technical articles from the Internet or the magazines, you're obtaining the knowledge from the author of the article which is very often journalist who interviewed the technician (in the best case) and than wrote article about the interview.
The technicians learn from the textbooks and from the experience. Even textbooks sometimes have a mistake in them and they get revised and corrected.
I’m not going to argue with you what is better for your or somebody's car on The Sunday Track Day but even WRX use top mounted water cooled intercooler.
