  • 1.9L v 2.0L Common problems

I'm considering a 06 comfortline 1.9l tdi 62000km's auto at about $20000. What issues are common in these cars? and can anyone recommend someone to check the car out for me prior to purchase? I live in Melbourne & the car is in North Melbourne. I was going to use RACV but some people on here have siad they dont really know much about golfs as someone that works on them everyday. If you do know anyone please include how much they charge & whats roughly included...
Also, are the 2.0L better in any way other than just having more power?

Also, if someone could recommed anyone quickly as I would like to get it over & done with this week since the guy has dropped the price.

Might I suggest you see this thread below and make sure you have the EGR
    checked out.

Hitorque has had a few problems after 66000km but he has the 2.0L maybe the older 1.9L may not be so problematic.

Also do a search for a Golf problem/fix thread, should be a sticky.
    Found it http://vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum...ead.php?t=5200

There was a similar thread regarding this a while back and the comments were mostly comparing the difference in power and performance, but also that due to the 1.9 TDI having significantly less power this placed a lot more strain on the engine in that it had to work a lot harder. I would imagine this is one of the reasons that VW have now done away with the 1.9 diesel engine in their new range of Golf and have gone with a 2.0 CR diesel (with the same engine specs as the previous 2.0 PD diesel) as the only diesel option available here at the moment.

The 2.0 TDI might be a bit more expensive but I think it would pay you to drive and compare both the 1.9 and the 2.0 TDI engines (if you haven't already) before making your decision.

I have test driven both. I do like the power of the 2.0L & notice how much better it is on take off. But I'm not too fussed. Because I'm on a tight budget. I have the option between a 2.0L 05 with 80000km or a 1.9L 06 with 60000Km (2months of warranty left). The 1.9 is better in all other aspects exept that its a 1.9L, which is why I ask. I'm indifferent about them. Just want one which I will have less issues with..

Would you know anyone with any knowledge of these type of cars that does these pre-purchase checks in Melbourne?

Nothing wrong with the 1.9 displacement wise. We ran these cars well over 200bhp with stock internals. Very strong engine indeed.

PD cam lobe wearing is the thing with PDs. One should not use oil change intervals 30-50tkm even the manufacturer recommends it. That's just plain stupid...

Mate the decision is yours, personally I'd go with the 2.0 litre, but make sure whatever way you go that you check the service history and if at all possible contact the servicing dealer and ask them about it. If they have nothing to hide they shouldn't have a problem telling you all about it, if they won't then ask them why not. If they can't give you a good reason then walk away and keep looking elsewhere.

IMO 1.9L should be fewer issues. It is less complicated engine and it is longer in production.
There is also less chance that 1.9 was modified - I wouldn't buy car, which was.
Which is another thing you should check before you make your decision.

Easier to find advice on hotting up the 1.9. especially from the us based forums like tdiclub. not as many tinker with the 2.0 bkd motor.

                  Although cogdoc differs on that!

                    hey seno, how are things?

the 1.9L engine has been around for donkeys, and is, from my understanding on the club, a strong little motor.

and in terms of power, of course the engine with the larger displacement will be faster than the 1.9 when both cars are modded in the same way, but the 1.9 (i have one in my polo) is a beut little engine with plenty of torque.

as for more power- its as simple as an engine remap (i'd recommend chippeduk- their maps are smooth as fork and really, really awaken the car, not to mention that you can keep it on stock map for weekday commuting, and switch to fast road/ track map for weekend fun).

                    good luck!

thank you all for your help. The 2.0L i was interest in was in crappy condition & the guy is asking way too much. It has scratches all over the place & peeling pain in some parts. as for the 1.9L, the guy has full service history & even all his receipts. He's dropped the price to $20500, if I change the windscreen so that it'll pass the rwc (quoted at $750 from vw freaking rediculous )..

I drove the 2.0L & definetly more power but the 1.9 gives enough power for a car of that size & probably even too much..

If I had the money I'd go the 2.0 but the 1.9 will do & seems good

seno, mate, sounds like the goer is the 1.9 in this case. by far.

i mean, they're both golfs, and thus both beautiful cars, but i think the writing is on the wall by the sound of things.

dont worry about replacing the windscreen with VW- i had an "incident" at frankston with dad a few months ago, checking out the little motor, lovely day up the beach, and the wind (80-100kmh) caught the hood and spanked the windscreen (dented hood, broken windscreen).

VW quoted me 650 to replace windscreen. Windscreens obrien booked me in same day, for $352.

go windscreens obrien. they have a lifetime warranty on workmanship, i DID find other places that were slightly less expensive (they all said "dont go with big companies because you're paying for the name and thats it), so i guess that's your call, but i figured same day service, big company=no hassles with warranty-ing any workmanship issues etc etc, why not?

but you could potentially get it done very, very close to the $300mark. dont go VW for the window.

i dont know how much the guy with the 2.0 is asking, but chances are, you could buy the (according to yourself) better condition 1.9, and with just 800aud for chip and around 800 for good tires, you'd have a fun little car with stock reliability. something tells me the guy with the 2.0 is asking for more than $21300, is this right?

as for pre-purchase checks, go to Volkspower in burwood. phone number is 9808-6777. i had my 30k service done there- it was 360aud as opposed to the 450-500 that VW was quoting me.

Dean and the boys there have great attention to detail, they absolutely know their stuff, and they are more than capable of accurately diagnosing any problems with your VW- they did for my mates '69 Beetle, and many people on this forum are repeat customers of his.

good luck! any q's, or if you want to hook up and have a chat sometime, let us know!

Thanks Scott thanks so much for your help.
I got the 1.9 down to $19580 which is what the seller has to pay out on his lease, which I think is quite a good price. The 2.0L wouldn't budge below $23000 so the decision was easy lol..
I had a look at a place called State Roads for the pre purchase inspection. Not sure how much they charge but they seem a lot more detailed that RACV. I just called Volkspower and they cant do anythin till next tuesday & because I got almost $4500 knocked off the price I can't wait lol.. I think i'll go with State Roads as at least they'll do a compression test & I can talk to the mechanic (which RACV won't offer). i'll definetly go there for my servicing (i'm talking as if i've already bought the car) loll oooo this is so exciting.. Volkspower is close to my uni & the guy on the phone was very friendly

                            thats a good buy, congratulations!!!!

when are you getting the inspection done? i think there shouldnt really be anything that will be problematic with the car that the mech wont be able to pick up- its practically a new car, underengineered (as in, it doesnt come out of the factory with computer settings etc that will have stressed the car from the get-go), it sounds like it has a good service and maintenance history, and its a diesel. Unlike a petrol, where, by 60,000klms, you'd want a good mech to pay close attention to detail and find any issues that might be starting to arise, your car (our cars, being that this is in the oilers section) havent even started to stretch their legs- its widely accepted that these engines are only really run in at the 100,000km mark.

yeah, Volkspower is legit. i will be taking my car to them for anything and everything, until it no longer runs.

Once you've bought the car, then you enter the wonderful, and packed-full of thousands and thousands of reading hours worth of literature, world of maintenance and tuning. Even learning how to drive a diesel takes a while-warming up gently, thrashing the crap out of it when warm, when to shift, what rev range not to plant it in, its all an interesting journey.

let us know how the inspection goes!

I'd agree with all of that except a "gentle" warmup. Drive it as per normal, it needs it to actually warm up! No thrashing, but we're talking 2k rpm plus friends, boost it a bit!
