Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

  • What is this?

hey I am a total noob with VW's in general...let alone turbo diesels. Was wondering what the part is:

Underneath the cover is some sort of wastegate looking device that is plumbed back into somewhere...Its sitting on a silicone pipe haha. I am pro with knowing how my diesel works

      lol!!

it could be anything... that's quite an unspecific arrow... coolant piping? intercooler piping? inlet?

take a better photo and it'll be easier to identify

A new common rail version, but the layout is the same.

I thought the oil filler positioning was obviously difficult enough for VW service staff not to spill any when refilling it from the front of the engine, imagine how much they'll be able to spill all over everything on the CR engine when the filler is at the rear of the engine

Technically speaking I know it's actually on the right hand side on PD engine and left hand side on the CR engine, I am referring to looking at it from the front of the car

but vw watercooled engines have always the filler cap in the valve cover either at one end or the other.... what difference does it make? i've never had trouble...

That is most likely the EGR.
(edited) I took another look - definitaly EGR.

Yep, the EGR valve motor. The EGR enters through a moving valve, and that's the motor that closes and opens it. Similarily, on the next part down, the "throttle" flap ( not that it is one really ) the motor for this is on the opposite side.

And no you can't just unplug it, tried that. Still nutting that one out.

I wasn't referring to myself, I was referring to the apprentice or whoever it was at the VW dealership that refilled mine after it's first oil and filter change. They managed to slop oil and obviously didn't clean it up very well after it because by the time I got home, when I got out of the car it stank of burning oil I told them about it and they said they do spill oil sometimes and can't always clean it all off

I myself am actually a pretty mean oil pourer but I always make sure and spread a rag around the filler cap just in case.

By the way if you look at the picture of the CR engine bay you'll be able to see what I'm referring to about the oil filler cap being at the rear of the engine (when looking at it from the front of the car) whereas the PD engine is at the front of the motor (when looking at it from the front of the car) hence my comment on the VW service person/s when filling the oil. Maybe the service person that worked on mine last time was a midget (no offence to any midgets on the forum either ) but it was obvious to me they found it difficult enough to fill from the front without spilling it so if they use the same method on the CR engine I can see more oil ending up under the car than in the engine

fair enough.... i just fill from the side of the car (drivers side wing) and use a little oil funnel....
