  • Will 1980 Passat Engine fit in 1979 Golf GLD??

    Hi All,

Looks like I need a new (secondhand) injector pump for my Golf GLD.

Saw there is a 1980 Diesel Passat on eBay with good engine/injector pump - just wondered if the engine would fit in the Golf?? Obviously the gearbox will be no good to me, but are all the engine mount threaded holes the same??

I thought I could maybe swap the entire engine and keep my original motor as a spare. Has anyone done this before??

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Huw

    Yes

    I personally haven't done a swap/replacement but the Golf/Passat blocks are identical.

You may have to drill the lower engine mtg holes out?

On some of the Passat motors the rear or manifold side lower bell housing bolt hole was threaded for a bolt. Being a later motor it might be ok. Check first or else you ain't going to get the gearbox stud through there!!!
