Hi guys and gals, a quick question. I have a 1981 1.5 diesel which is having the head put back on. I have been supplied the bolts from a reputable VW supplier on the Sunshine Coast. The existing head bolts are 90mm long. The new ones supplied are 115mm long and have a more aggressive thread. The supplier says that I do not have a diesel engine, it is a petrol engine! I am wondering 2 things. Firstly weren't the blocks on the Mk1 Golfs the same, so maybe I do have a petrol block (it is stamped with CK 407246 in the middle of the block), in which case I need to change the bolts, or secondly could I re-use the old head bolts? Or have they stretched?

CK is a diesel engine code... you must have a diesel... hahaha does it go "clatterty clatterty clatter"?
seriously though, the 1.5 diesel came with non-stretch head bolts (reuseable) but i'm not 100% on this for your engine given the year (81) being so late.... either way, the original dimensions of the head bolts will be identical... so obviously you've been given the wrong studs mate... give them an old one to look at'07 Touareg V6 TDI with air suspension

What do you mean by aggressive thread? Do you mean different pitch?
Are they 11mm or 12mm dia,?Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

The thread is thicker and the original thread is finer, closer together, not sure what pitch means, they don't sing. Have re-used the old bolts in order to get the thing running and out of the shed. Nearly finished. Just a few bits needed for the roadworthy and I can sell it. I already have a Golf Mk3 Tdi speed machine!Mk3 Golf Tdi about to sell

Pitch is the distance from the top of one thread form to the top of the next.
This will measure something like 1.0mm, 1.5mm or 2.0mm. The lower the no the finer the thread. Hope that makes sense.
The question I asked about the dia. is related to a change to larger bolts in the later engines. Not sure when that came in.Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

What no fuel primer?
Just been trying to start the Mk diesel with the mechanic, and there is no fuel primer fitted to the fuel filter (as shown in the workshop manual) so we had to pressurise the fuel tank by pushing compressed air down the fuel return line. It looks as if I have an after market fuel filter. Am I correct to assume that the fuel is pumped (or rather sucked) from the tank by the injector as there is no mechanical or electric lifter anywhere on the car? SO if this is all correct I reckon I need to fit a hand lifter or electric fuel lifter so that the car can be started!! Any ideas welcomeMk3 Golf Tdi about to sell

The Bosh Injection system has no fuel lift pump, it is self bleeding.
I fitted an electric fuelpump temporarly behind the fuel filter to suck fuel from the tank, than reconnected the injector pump and loosened the injector pipes on the pump, til fuel leekt from them, than loosened the pipes at the injectors
til fuel leeked there, the engine started then, than cracked the lines again at the injectors individuelly, one after the other, til the engine run round.

the VE pump is self priming, but oyu need to crank it a lot to do so. gor to BCF and get a $8.95 inline primer pump for an outboard and plumb it into your fuel line'07 Touareg V6 TDI with air suspension

Primung Bosch Diesel Injactor Pump
I tried an outboard fuel primer first, but it was too old and hard and would'nt work, so with a bit of headscratching, I remembered that I had this electric fuel pump lying around , after fitting it, the engine run within minutes.
