    Ive just fitted the GT rear valance to my 06 TDI Comfortline and looking for suggestions regarding how to get the twin pipes exiting out the back. Original muffler has twin outlets facing down towards road.

    Should I just get an exhaust shop to cut off existing tips and weld new ones on? Can the rear muffler be totally removed and just have a new pipe welded in? Legality..noise issues etc?

    Anybody here done any exhaust mods on MKV oilers?
    I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

    depends what kind of sound you want out of it. sure you can chop the rear muffler out but you might get more of a drone. you wont have any decibel issues though since a diesel will never be really loud.

    if i were you i'd do one of two things:
    -have a full exhaust made up locally from the turbo all the way back for approx 1k or:
    -just chop the downwards facing pipes off and weld on some tips

    its not going to sound the best if you do something in between those two things.

      I have read on a few forums that getting rid of the muffler will not make it louder but am concerned about the droning issue. Cut and replace tips is certainly the easiest and cheapest option.

      Thanks for the fitting tips too Mischa..was a piece of piss to do and didn't take long at all.
      I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

          There's a resonator in the stock system just before the rear wheel area, and this will remove the majority of any drone. Larrt LGT20 from memory removed his rear panckae muffler on his GT TDI and said he noticed absolutley nothing. Legally you can't alter the system from stock, but if it's no louder, you don't run car length greddy stickers, and keep your fooly sik subs down I'm sure you'd be pretty safe.

          Personally, mine is headed for the bin.

            Funny, we run a GTI valance and have not yet added tips - my lady actually likes it without... :/

              Only thing that might draw attention is the smoke. legally diesels have to point downwards due to the soot, the GT gets away with that by using a DPF.

                  Mum has the 140HP Passat TDI which doesn't have a DPF and her exhaust tips aren't exactly pointed at the road, there is only a slight curve right at the very end. Is it actually a legal requirement in Australia? I was behind a BMW X5 diesel last week and its exhausts point straight back (and are quite high up), I don't think it has a DPF judging by the smoke that came from it when the driver overtook someone on the freeway.



                  I know the 170HP Passat TDI has a DPF and its exhaust does point straight back, as does the Tiguan TDI with the 140 + DPF.

                  I have been thinking about putting a GTI colour coded valance + tips on my TDI so this topic is of interest to me - don't want anything illegal.

                    I think you are telling a furphy! That would make 90% of diesel vehicles on Australian roads illegal and a fair percentage of vehicles in new car showrooms would also not meet that standard.

                        I figure tips down is more out of consideration than law.

                        Any bypass of my DPF will be dumping onto the road for that very reason.
