Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

hmm... you know, I got no idea if I smoke or not, thanks to those "running in new diesel articles" I occasionally floor it from a stop/lights, but never seen any smoke myself.

I assumed cause I have CR injection and a PF, I don't smoke, but maybe I do?
    how would I know?
If my car does smoke, I guess the flooring it thing isn't very nice thing to do.

If you have the particle filter, for the new Euro emissions, then very little if any soot is escaping. Even the normal MKV TDI without the DPF only really smokes if you're fair up it. In normal traffic, you have to be looking for it to actually see much at all, at least that's what I've seen.

        That's poor form indeed!
But think of the car behind you....double smoked!

The best way to see if you smoke or not is to look in the rear view mirror at night when you are accelerating (hard) away from a following car. If there is much smoke you will see it in their headlights. If you smoke a lot you can see it during the day.

Most cars with DPFs hardly produce any visible soot at all (if they do, it usually indicates a problem with their DPF).

I was driving along on the M4 this arvo and a Jetta TDI went past me probably doing 120. The thing was tho they were smoking but it was a puff every 5 seconds or so. What causes that?

Another possiblity is he was doing the "pulse and coast" thing, only in this example he wasn't doing it to save fuel. I had a young bloke test drive my old Laser recently. I couldn't believe his driving style. He was constantly flooring the acclerator, realizing he was 20kmh over the speed limit, so backed off, slowed down, then floored it again - over and over until we got to a corner or roundabout. And that was on a level, straight, 4 lane highway ! I can't imagine what sort of economy he will get from whatever car he ended up buying (my $2,000 1990 Laser TX3 with only 185,000Km was too much of a "chicks car" for his taste).
